Does anyone know if I can have a locksmith cut a key to use on my Burgman 400. I don't normally lock the ignition cover. I do know that the shoulders of the key have to be cut deeper to unlock the trunk.

You can have a key cut if they have the proper blank.  It takes one with a shank long enough to insert fully in.  On the BurgmanUSA site people have posted what the number for the blank is.  I will look and see if I can find it.

It looks like you already know that the key will not open or close the security shutter.  That works fine as long as someone doesn't walk up and close the shutter on you.  It can be closed with many things including the tip of a finger.  So if you are not carrying the OEM key with the head that opens the shutter you can be at risk of being locked out.

Thanks for all the responses. The dealer said a domestic waterhouse has 10 blank keys on hand. $ 30.00. The cheap keys on the internet all ship from China. That may be problematic right now.

A couple years ago I posted instructions (somewhere?) on how to duplicate a Burgman key that WILL operate the cover.  I couldn't readily find it, but I did find this linked video if you're interested.
What the video doesn't show is you not only have to get the magnets in the right slots, but you also have to get the polarity of each right.  The easiest way to do this is to magnetically attach the three loose magnets to your OEM key (you may have to do one at a time lest they interact).  They should only stick one way, i.e., N pole of the loose magnet will only stick to the S pole of the magnet in the OEM key.  So with the OEM and new keys side by side you can simply move the loose magnet (N side down in prior example) into the corresponding slot on the new key.  In that manner, the S pole of the magnet in the new key will be oriented like that in the OEM key.  Then repeat for the other two magnets/slots.  Take care because once you put a magnet all the way into a slot (friction fit), it's near impossible to get out.
Just Google 'burgman 400 key' to find a blank key seller.

ANY similar Burgman key will close the shutter.  I believe it was EZ Mark who found this out years ago at a rally where a helpful soul (I don't recall who - Maggie recall?) closed his cover and Mark did not have an OEM key with him.  Fortunately there was a locksmith at the rally who was able to force the cover open.
