The problem with the DOT rating is that the manufacturers get to self-report and self-inspect. We've all seen where that led Boeing!!!

IMHO there should be no self-reporting/inspections allowed when safety is at stake. Personally, all my helmets are Snell.

One odd thing regards ratings ... Snell certifies only open face and full face helmets, no modular helmets.  Their response on modulars is that they must (says who?) hold modular helmets to the same standard as full face helmets, and only one modular (no longer available) ever met their full face standard*.  Yet they readily concede that a modular helmet provides face protection where an open face provides none.  Seems a bit hypocritical - they won't develop a standard for modular helmets because they're not as good as full face helmets.  Well, neither are open face, but they certify them.

And it's not as if they've no precedent for developing new style helmet standards.  Snell tested open face face helmets before full face helmets existed.  So they necessarily developed a standard specifically for full face helmets.  I seriously doubt anyone expects a Snell rated open face helmet to provide the same protection as a Snell rated full face helmet, yet their stance seems to say that would be the case if they had a modular helmet standard.  "Illogical, captain"

* The main failure mode of the modular that causes it to fail their full face tests is apparently the ability to withstand three successive chin impacts.
