Don't sweat the small stuff...it's all small stuff

Denali/Mt. McKinley (the old name) is one of my favorite things to photograph.  The usual view shows the whole mountain, either from a popular viewpoint along the Parks Hwy, or from inside Denali Park.  I wanted to shoot it a little differently.  The peak of Denali is at the upper left part of the picture.

Greg, is that a recent shot or taken some time ago? I'm told there are very few days a year that have a good clear view of the mountain. On my first time there, 1978 I think, we took the all day bus ride into Wonder Lake. A Fairbanks resident told me that day was the first time in 12 years of visiting he was able to actually see the mountain. That must have been my lucky day. Ten years later I visited again but didn't do the bus ride. Again, the mountain was clear as a bell. BTW, both of these visits were on two wheels leaving from SE Mich.

That photo was from 2016, with my Nikon D7200.  The fact is, that mountain is a near stand alone landmass that is so large that it tends to generate its own weather.  There are times when the weather all around is clear, blue sky and sunshine, while Denali is covered with clouds.  I’ve been up there a number of times when the weather was nice, but there were a few clouds, and all of them were around the mountain.  And I’ve been up there when you couldn’t see it, but everything else was in the sunshine.  You just never know.  I can recall one time when I went up there the mountain was beautiful and in the clear, but by the time I got up the viewpoint, I watched the clouds form and cover the top half of the mountain.  She’s a fickle lady.  The statistics say that you only stand about a 30-40% chance of seeing Denali clear.  We’re fortunate that it’s just a two hour drive to get to the wayside to view the mountain.

Thank you, Cathy.  The mountain is one of my favorite subjects.  Since I don’t ride anymore, I take pictures.  Not as thrilling, but pretty satisfying.

Here’s another one.  Not Denali, but near our house.  Sunset at 3:30pm on Dec. 20, from Hatcher Pass.  I titled this one, “The Heavens Declare the Glory of God,” from Psalm 19:1.

The heavens can put on quite a show when they want to.

Yes they can.  I’ve got a few similar photos, but none as dramatic as this one.

Thanks, Eric.  Once in awhile I manage to take one good enough to share.  Glad you liked it.
