Cloud cover here in the WNC. BTW, with my camera on full zoom I can almost see Halifax from here.

Cloud here as well .... and this is when the APOD site comes in handy.  In case you didn't see it, here is their picture from the other evening ....following the moon and planets.

Love the northern lights shots Greg.  I've seen them up close(r) but Karin never has and that's definitely on her bucket list.

So pretty Greg!   I saw the Northern Lights while at Moosonee , Canada.   It was amazing.  I remember watching for hours.

Thanks for the link skier, I've never knowingly seen Mercury. I'm guessing it's only viewable for a few hours each year.

Thanks Maggie. BTW, little cold to be out stargazing isn't it?
Here's a couple more moon shots I took some time ago. Using the auto mode on my camera it focused on the trees in the foreground.

Went outside this evening to look for Jupiter. Should have done so an hour or more earlier so I could get a little twilight in this picture. Tomorrow the moon will be much further from Jupiter.

Nice shot Yellow Jacket !

Nothing but nasty weather in our skies last night.  Freezing rain, ice-pellets and wind -- all of which knocked out power in some areas.

WOW! I saw that a couple nights in a row (naked eye... no telescope) Knew it was a
planet but didn't look it up to find out which one it was... but now I know. Very cool.

It is March Super Moon time !  The near perigee distance tonight is 223031 miles at about 7pm ADT tonight.  From my home to Ski Martock is a 45 minute drive. Looking out from my front door is the same alignment as looking straight up the hill, if at Martock.  The picture shows a quiet Sunday evening  at the ski hill with the Super Moon to the left in the picture as seen through one of the NS Web Cameras ... the  web cam at Martock.  The second picture is one hastily taken with a Nikon D40X connected to a Celestron C90 telephoto lense.  In the dark of early morning the are a few planets visible but you can see the clouds moving in now for tomorrow.

Ahhh ..looks like clearer skies at the other ski hill tonight.  This one, Ski Wentworth, is more to the east of Martock and about 90 minutes drive from home. The cloudy weather is coming from the west.

Nice shot of the moon that. Just came in from looking at the night sky. Looks like one more day for a full moon. Jupiter is very bright tonight. Very clear here in WNC.

Ski, have you tried to get Jupiter and it's moons with your Celestron? I Can't get the moons to show up with my camera, at high zoom it fails to focus.

Not with this camera.  Not sure how well the moons of Jupiter would show up with the C90.  Maybe OK with an eyepiece in line with the camera.  Will have to check.  I have a C8 with which I may have the moons on film from years ago.  The D40X is something of a learning curve right now.  A learning curve I want to "get after".

Very nice shot, Mike!

We had clouds, this was all I could manage with the iPhone camera.

Tomorrow night should be a good night to see the moon and Jupiter in the evening sky. Still trying to get Jupiter clear enough to see some of the moons around it. No luck to night but will be trying again tomorrow.

Last night was hoping to see the "triangle"  Crescent Moon, Venus and Pleiades.   Too much cloud cover however tonight should be perfect!

I did get a good consolation prize last night.

A really nice consolation prize Maggie !!

If there were snow capped mountains in the shot somewhere, we would thought it was a Greg shot.

Great sunset picture !

looks like I should have done better research on the location of the planets. Thanks to this thread I now know I've been looking at Venus, not Jupiter. Worst part of that is having to admit to my wife I was wrong about something. So no more trying to see moons around Jupiter. If I had a decent telescope I would have known I was looking at Venus, not Jupiter.
