An insurance adjuster( Progressive) just left, after assessing the damage my Goldwing sustained last week. While riding down the road, my bike was struck by a large chunk of metal that came sliding at me that I couldn't avoid. It bounced up puncturing the engine block-immediately dumping all of the oil. Of course it covered the rear tire which contributed greatly to the severe "puckering" I was already experiencing. I was able to get safely to the shoulder, filed a police report, and got it towed the six miles home ($150, out of pocket). My insurance agent was less than helpful, but fortunately the people at Progressive claims were great to deal with and very efficient, as was the adjuster. I was made, to my surprise, what I think was a very fair offer-especially considering that I have a deep emotional attachment to this bike. To say I was pleased with the service is an understatement. My agent, not so much, and I will be changing immediately.
At this point I'll be keeping the bike, but undecided as to whether or not I'll part it or if I'll  attempt to weld it.
If you are looking for insurance for your bike or scooter( I insure four), I suggest taking a serious look at Progressive. They were there when I needed them, and their pricing-at least for me- has been more than competitive.

Wow! First off I'm glad to hear that you didn't get impaled from the chunk of metal. Regarding the GW, will you get right on it and get it fixed or parted or will it sit in your garage till you get around to it? Me? I would let the insurance company total it and take my check and go on my merry way. All the best in your decision.

Wow, glad you are okay but sorry to hear about your faithful Goldwing. I agree about Progressive from my own experience. They made every effort to make me whole and covered virtually everything but I have full coverage with medical too. Tough decision ahead but someone on the back seat might have an idea...

I'm also pleased the Gold Wing, rather than you, took the damage. Glad you walked away from the incident.

Progressive, set up through USAA, became my motorcycle/ATV insurer shortly after moving to Georgia.

I had Progressive, through USAA, for our motorcycles, and found them good, although I never had to make a claim, fortunately.  I’m very happy that you were able to keep it together and get off the road safely.  Too bad about the bike.  I have to echo Virginian’s advice to let the insurance company total it.  You’d have the option to buy it back for peanuts, then either part it out or have it repaired.

There had to be someone looking after you.  All that oil .... and you were able to get to safety unhurt?  WOW.  really lucky you are.
Sorry for the loss of the bike.  Sounds like Progressive is the insurer to work with.  Must check to see if they are in Canada too.

Really glad you are OK.

I was prepared to have to battle the adjuster, but their offers were very close to what I thought would be a best case scenario. Although they valued it as a write off, I'm going to buy it back for the $300 salvage price. I'm either going to sell it as is, or try to weld up the case (experienced w/ tig welding aluminum), and hopefully it works.

That is what I did to the Reflex. Bought it for 300 from them and fixed it. Just got back from a ride.

Bruce glad you are alright as I said in my text over the weekend when you told me of your “pucker” moment.  I was talking to my friend down in TX she is planning on selling her brothers 2001 GL 1800.  It is located in Bernanillo,  NM just north of Albuquerque.  They are planning on going there next week.  I can get more info on it if you are interested.  What I do know it has 20,235 miles on it and it is a dark burgundy red.  I think it has a hitch.  It is in nice shape. Needs a battery hasn’t been started in awhile. Here is a picture of it.

Glad you're OK Bruce.
Time to get that GL1800.

You know I'm gonna go with this!!

Glad to hear your OK!! I had progressive insurance when I hit the deer with my 650 Burgman. They were fantastic with their settlement with me. Sadly shortly after that I had to drop them because of their skyrocketing rates.

If you do decide to go with an older 1800 be sure to get a belly pan for it. Who knows a belly pan could of saved your 1500.

My case is repaired!!!It took me eight hours of wrenching to remove some of the plastics and shields, thoroughly clean underneath, and make the necessary repairs. A few more hours, flushing and refilling the cooling and oiling systems, and making sure there was no other damage. Before I put it all back together, I gave it a test ride of about twenty miles and it is running fine! While most of fairing is off, I have to fix a minor coolant leak-that I was aware of previously-before I put it all together again. It may be as simple as retightening some hose clamps, as the hoses were all replaced not too long ago. but that will have to wait until spring. After taking care of that, I'll have to see how and where to get the bike re inspected, to satisfy the insurance company, so I can get my comp and collision coverages back on it. Right now, because of the payout, they will only insure it for liability- which is fine, but I'm going to sell it and I want to make sure whoever buys it can get full coverage if they want-or at least is aware that they can or can't. At least the title didn't get flagged and it remains clear!
Anyone interested in buying a great riding & running 1500 Goldwing? I'll store it until spring, brand new tires, sixty seven thousand well maintained miles, same fussy owner for better than the last fifteen years or so, and the price will be more than reasonable?

I don't think so.  As much as I love riding the Goldwing, it would have to be an unbelievable deal for me to get another one at this point.
