The month of April continues to be a good one for servicing and preparing the Yamaherd. After the TMax's service, the FZ-09's number comes up for tire replacement. With a refreshing supply of Pibb Zero on hand and Electric Light Orchestra booming from the bluetooth speaker, off comes the rear tire/wheel. Don't Bring Me Down!



The tire tread is into the wear bars, farther than I usually let them go. Normally I would spoon the tires off and on, then balance them myself. However, our local Yamaha dealer offers fast service via 'no contact' drop-off, pay by phone, and pick-up. A couple of hours and less than $24 later, the mounted and balanced tire/wheel returns to my possession, ready for final installation on the FZ-09.

Except for the originals years ago, I use Pirelli Angel GT tires and almost choose the same model again. After contemplating and almost rejecting the additional $30 expense, I accept an offer on the Angel GT II.



Returning my attention to the TMax, I remove the rear cover and re-visit the hardware that would hold the top box rack in place. After a couple of months, I'm increasingly sure this option isn't for me. However, the top box, rack, and mounting hardware are on a nearby shelf... just in case. The top box appears in the first photo of this post, visible above the TMax's left mirror and deflector.



Removing the rear cover, I expect to find three unused threaded openings, which is exactly what I find. Two of them are part of the hardware attaching the seat to the frame. This must not continue. The original bolts are nowhere in sight, which isn't surprising after the rack removal.



Time for the containers of miscellaneous small hardware to come out for inspection. They contain nuts, bolts, screws, etc. from scrapped or discarded items over the years but have, although not always, an unfortunate tendency to be incompatible with whatever current project may be underway.

However, fortune smiles today! The black button head bolt, pictured with the yellow arrow, matches the thread and hex socket size of originals in the TMax. An empty opening, pictured with the white arrow, and its partner on the right side but out of view, receive their matching bolts from the containers of treasure.

Motorcycle TLC makes social distancing much less of a burden! And... the Morphous is calling...  :D

Many of my rides since moving to Georgia include crossing the North Carolina and Tennessee state lines before returning home. One of my new favorites is today's ride around Blue Ridge Lake, just over 30 miles, all within Fannin County. The roughly circular ride starts southward on Aska Road to the lake’s west, about a mile from the Old US 76 intersection in Blue Ridge. Riding the TMax through the ‘Aska Adventure Area’ provides a nice warm-up, with rolling hills and moderate curves, a useful preparation for more challenging road features farther ahead.

Although not yet a Georgia resident for a full year, I am familiar with an increasing number of landmarks along the Toccoa River. These include opportunities for tubing, kayaking, hiking, bicycling and cabin rentals. Restaurants and stores are also available, but not in great numbers. However, the city of Blue Ridge requires only a modest drive for a greater range of options.

Now south of Blue Ridge Lake and traveling east, I stop at Van Zandt’s Store. Mary and I met the owners and enjoyed a delicious lunch in late 2019, just prior to the store’s closure for the season. The store, as with the businesses mentioned previously, is still closed, and traffic in the area is minimal. A return visit to Van Zandt’s upon reopening is high on the priority list.





Leaving Van Zandt’s Store, I cross the Toccoa River and soon pass two motorcycles parked on the side of the road. Their dismounted riders/passengers and I pleasantly exchange waves on my way to the Route 60 highway intersection. This section of highway connects Suches and Morganton. One day, hopefully very soon, I will turn right towards Suches, but today a left turn towards Morganton continues the circle around Blue Ridge Lake. On several occasions, the highway provides fast, straight approaches to much lower speed curves.



I now coach myself rather than students with phrases from Basic Rider Course classes; turn your head, press and lean, look though the turn, and others. And they work! Farther ahead, a few miles from Morganton, a series of increasingly sharp curves await, so ride your own ride. On the last section of highway prior to Morganton, I spot a wonderful photo opportunity and a safe area to stop.



This photo looks toward home in the distance. Just as my cell phone returns to my jacket pocket, I hear a motorcycle approaching on Route 60. The engine sound doesn’t seem quite right out here, and the rider turns out to be a youngster on probably no more than a 100cc trail bike. He seems to be King of the Road for a few moments, and with so little traffic perhaps indeed he is. Still stopped, I admire his riding technique around the curve near my photo op location. However, my attempt to retrieve the cell phone for another photo was too late.

By the time I return to the highway in the same direction as the trail bike rider, he is gone, so I ride alone into Morganton. The remaining ride is uneventful, but crossing the bridge over the Blue Ridge Lake Dam is always a pleasure. In a few moments, I turn left onto Aska Road, the starting and ending point of today’s adventure.

The ride around Blue Ridge Lake passes many landmarks and, after my TMax journey, the Morphous is ready to roll. With a much less powerful engine, the Morphous really benefits from not giving up too much speed in curves prior to an uphill section of road. The experience is similar, but enjoyably different, from the same route on the TMax.

A brief detour on my route takes me across the Shallowford Bridge, built in 1918. The steel bridge has a seven ton weight limit, and provides access to many vacation rental cabins along the Toccoa River. All of the cabins are empty for a couple more days, so riding around here is remarkably easy.



Keeping the wheels on the elevated sections of the bridge deck seems preferable, but I have seen riders on the middle section of similar bridge decks go down when moving to one side or the other.

Nice looking ride. I wish Florida rained TMAX's.  Enjoy the day and ride your ass off.  I might upgrade my SW with the GIVI windshield.  My previous SW had on and the weather/wind protection was excellent.

Thursday the 7th is a wonderful spring day in north Georgia. The temperature is a few degrees less than the summer preview warmth from earlier in the week, but near ideal riding weather. Win (klaviator) travels from Alabama to Georgia and visits Steve (not this Steve, but another one), who lives less than 15 minutes from my home. Small world.

After a visit to the local Yamaha dealership, lunch together, and a brief stop to set up our ride, we travel through the Aska Adventure Area and stop for photographs at, among other places, the Shallowford Bridge, a location from one of my recent posts in this thread. Win and Steve are both riding Kymco Like 150i scooters of similar but not identical appearance, as I ride my Yamaha Morphous.



We proceed to Route 60 and, although the first time for me, we make the right turn onto Route 60 for a fuel stop and then until we reach Two Wheels of Suches. The following photo includes a Kymco Downtown 300i nearest the viewer. Another rider, Doug, joins us at Two Wheels on the 300i for the rest of the ride.



Two Wheels is still closed, but hopefully the closure ends soon. This place reminds me of Steel Steeds from the 2012 Pennsylvania rally and, even considering the eight year interval, Two Wheels seems the preferable location.



After a pleasant visit, the arrival of an additional rider mentioned previously (Doug), and plenty of conversation, we proceed on Route 180 towards Blairsville. My previous rides to Blairsville are limited to four lane highway travel. This ride is much different, with near continuous curves and elevation changes that leave me admiring the other riders' skills... from an increasing distance behind.

For a few minutes on our return to Blue Ridge, Win and I exchange rides. After a few moments addressing the unfamiliar seating position and inadvertently 'testing' the horn, I find the Kymco Like 150i a very impressive ride. Returning to an already familiar section of Route 60 near Morganton, we stop for an additional photo op.



Another stop, this time at the Blue Ridge Marina, provides a setting for a 'Morphous of the Lake' moment and more conversation.



Five or six hours somehow pass unexpectedly fast, and late afternoon arrives. Our ride approaches its end, but this is such a great ride!

Saturday provides a warm sunny day, with temperature climbing into the 80s, in north Georgia and southeast Tennessee. The planned short ride on my Morphous turns into a much longer one, with several stops including one on my growing list of favorite places... McCaysville, Georgia.

Saturday the 23rd includes what turns out to be my 'Tour de Tractor Supply'. For Olivia's deployment this summer, including regular shifts in a ship's engine spaces, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy recommends a supply of five canvas utility work pants. Tractor Supply happens to have one of the recommended brands on sale. All we need are four more to go with the one she already owns.

Fortunately, I have an account with Tractor Supply. On Friday, I order them on-line from our local store. Later, the store cancels the order as the pants in her size are no longer in stock. Regardless of the order quantity, the same result occurs in three more stores in north Georgia and southeast Tennessee. This is apparently a popular sale.

Partial success arrives as one is available in Murphy, North Carolina and ready for pickup. One down, three to go. Tractor Supply will ship the item from store to store for an additional $20 fee, which doesn't interest me. Saturday's forecast looks spectacular, and a ride to Murphy is always a pleasure. A road trip sounds wonderful.

The stores in Weaverville, North Carolina and Dawsonville, Georgia accept and then cancel my orders due to stockouts. Then the winds of shopping results turn yet again. Canton, Georgia has two Tractor Supply stores. One of them accepts my order for two, and other accepts my order for one. The waiting continues... cancel or ready for pickup?

E-mails from both stores arrive with the same message... ready for pickup for a grand total of four! Woo-hoo! The road trip now looks like 200+ miles with plenty of highway travel, and internal storage preferred. TMax time arrives.

Saturday's ride to Murphy normally takes just over a half hour, but this is not a normal ride. Over an hour later while riding through Blairsville, Georgia before crossing into North Carolina with a couple of light showers on the way, I arrive at the Tractor Supply store apparently just as heavier rain leaves the area.



The longest leg of the journey follows, but the temptation to cross into Tennessee towards Ducktown rather than follow a more direct route to Canton, Georgia proves irresistible. Visiting Copperhill, Tennessee and McCaysville, Georgia is, as always, a welcome ride. Clouds and the chance of rain mostly disappear as brilliant sunshine takes their place.

My route continues to Blue Ridge, and then south on the very crowded highway Routes 76, 515, and 575 towards Ellijay, Jasper, Ball Ground, and beyond. Canton is a rapidly growing city in Georgia and, after exiting the highway, the traffic is bumper to bumper in many places. Out of my regular riding area, map software becomes necessary. Where are these two stores? Fortunately, they are right where the map software indicates.



This should be a very fast stop. I'll go in the store, get the item, and leave. The store staff is very pleasant, and all goes well. Walking outside, I notice a few people gathered around the TMax, but several feet away. 10 or 15 minutes of conversation ("I've never heard of a TMax, but I like it.") follow as I attempt to answer the questions, which is no hardship at all.  :D

One more stop remains on the schedule, this time for two pants rather than just one. I stop a couple times to check my route, but the other Canton store comes into view. Again, the store staff is excellent and I emerge to find people admiring the TMax.



Raising the seat and showing the internal storage draws favorable comments. As others disperse, one fellow about my age (a young guy!), mentions owning three motorcycles including a Honda Hawk. More discussion follows on such an interesting subject. His wife, perhaps suspecting an impromptu, extended parking lot conversation on a hot Saturday afternoon, politely draws him away from the TMax.

With knowing smiles and best wishes, we part company and head our separate ways. My return ride to Blue Ridge is reasonably uneventful, once again with heavy traffic most of the way. 200+ miles and most of the day later, my 'Tour de Tractor Supply' is complete, and a success.
