Haven't had a Rich sighting in a long time.....hope he's alright. The last time he disappeared, it was (what else?) a woman.

Hope he is OK

Agreed, hope he's alright. Or hopefully at least on the mend.

The last text I got from him was 8/5 said he would be in the area

I tried to call the number I have for him and it said that number has calling restrictions?? Was a Verizon message.  I did text nothing back yet.

Rich passed away from injuries from a motorcycle accident.   Apparently after he texted me he was back on the road and about midnight he had a rear tire blow out.   Kansas Troopers found him after midnight.

He was paralyzed from the neck down and was on a breathing machine for a few days.  He passed away on 8-8-18.

Cathy spoke to his law partner this afternoon and got this news :-(

I just donít know what to say.

RIP, Rich.

Prayers for friends and family.

Never met him. IIRC, he rode a LOT! From Chicago?
Didn't he buy a DN-01 in Chattanooga last spring or so?

For sure,   RIP, Rich.  Just sitting here reading this in shock and missing a great contributor to the site.  I can only try to imagine how those of you who knew him well, are feeling.  Prayers for Rich and for all of you who are equally shocked by this.  With the accidents he has had, I never expected to read that a motorcycle accident would take him out.

I am so sorry to learn about Rich.  He posted frequently here and kept us entertained with his cross country touring stories.  He seemed like an all around good guy.  RIP Rich.  May the roads there all be paved in perfectly smooth asphalt and may your gas tank never need filling or the oil changed, and may the sun always shine.  I believe he is the first member of our Maxi-Scoot board family to be claimed by the road.  It was good that he went out doing what he loved doing.  We will all miss him and we mourn his passing.

« Reply #18 on: October 24, 2018, 01:46:26 PM »

I was restless all night thinking about Rich.

We last saw him at the end of April he came to the house as I was healing from my knee injury.  Rich was looking great, he had lost over a 100 pounds.

He was going to make it a quick visit but stayed for about 4 hours.  We had some good conversations and laughs.

Pete and I will miss seeing him on his trips to St. Louis.

Yes he was a strange duck as we all have a rally story about seeing him appear and just disappear as quickly.   We first met him at a Moonshine rally, he rode down for a burger.

As much as a goof as he presented himself he was an extremely good lawyer.  He and I were on differing poles of issues but he had a new area of law he was  practicing and the concept was interesting & profitable.

He was married once, had no children but was a step father to a mentally challenged daughter.   He cared for her even after the divorce until her death.  We all know how much he loved his Father.  When we spoke in April his brother who had pancreatic cancer was still alive, I believe.

Rich was about Pete's age, 67.  I know it's an old cliche but he certainly died doing what he loved, riding.

I was restless all night thinking about Rich.

Same here, and I looked around until finding this photo from the 2012 Lewisburg rally.

We met one other time when he purchased a Burgman 650 in Maryland and we rode together to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

I know it's an old cliche but he certainly died doing what he loved, riding.

Before reading your post, I had the same thought. He loved riding. RIP, Rich.

Well after the shock of hearing the news I just thought about a few memories with Rich. While he was an enigma he seemed to be the happiest he had ever been, found love, bought a convertible sports car and lost weight and felt good. Just a shame, he loved those long solo runs to see friends and come to the rallies. Peace to the restless soul but hard to say goodbye.

I'm sorry to find out so late. He certainly was a strange duck, in ways, but never failed to make me laugh and was willing to help out when I got a high speed driving award. I guess it's a good thing that none of us got to see him in the hospital. We'll always have good memories and funny stories when we think of him.

I was restless all night thinking about Rich.

Same here in NS.
My restless night included a dream where I stopped into the rink where I generally skate.  It had been a while, so I was stopping in to talk with the rink manager ... who rides a Vulcan 1300.  In the dream, I was telling him about Rich and added to be careful.  I tend to dream often so it was no surprise the news of Rich was in the dreams last night.

I first met Rich at the Pennsylvania rally. One day we were on a group ride and I was kind of tired so I did some stretching on the bike. When we stopped, Rich said "I don't appreciate you taking your hands off the bars while you're riding." At first I thought he was joking so I said "It's all right, I can handle it." He said "It's not safe to do that when you're riding in a group." I realized he wasn't joking so I said "I've been riding for 40 years, I'm not going to kill anybody taking my hands off the bars." He said "Well I don't like watching you do that." I said "Then you should probably ride in front of me." We didn't socialize the rest of that rally.
I met him again at the St Louis rally and I guess he didn't remember me. We were talking and getting along great when he said "There was some jackoff riding with his hands off the bars at the PA rally." I said 'That was me Rich." He said "Oh, I'm sorry. Was that really you?" I said "Yeah, but don't worry, I don't hold a grudge."
We laughed and got along just fine after that. I hope they have an FJR for you in the afterlife Rich. RIP buddy.

Yesterday I lost my very first riding buddy. In fact, he's the guy that actually taught me to love catching bugs in my teeth. I've got to admit that it was quite a few decades ago and I had to help him "steer" his Bonneville by sitting on the tank in front of him but, that's what buddies are far.

I signed his obituary today after having expressed my condolences to his offspring already so I just typed in "RIP" then it hit me that, at lest in our case, that "R" stands for RIDE!

I've never personally met anyone on this forum (those annual meet-ups are just too far from South Dakota), but it still gives me a sad, hollow feeling when one of us 'goes missing'.
