Because many have asked about the devastating fire we had here in July I thought to post a few pix in hopes of telling a part of the story that was passed over in the US news channels.

These photos were taken on the fringes of the deadly area which is still closed to traffic. I've left the scoot in the photo to help show the narrowness of the roads. Even as narrow as these roads are down in the vacation area they're, maybe, half to two-thirds of this width which trapped the people in.

Another big part of the story was the wind. Even today, as I road down that way the wind was whipping around at, I'd guess, 40+MpH and coming from all directions. The 5 frame sequence of the flags was but 1 second of elapsed time. (No, I don't do video!) (Yes, I know the camera does full HDt.)

It should also be noted that US satellite images of the area are reported to show, conclusively, that the fires were arson.

Very sad for the victims. Fire is a beast in the wind.

Thanks Don. I'd thought of asking you to post about this but you been mighty busy lately. It is even sadder that it was intentional.
For reference, how far from you was this? (as the crow flies).
Glad on the other hand to see you out riding(scooter therapy?) and that beautiful X10 looking like a pearl.
I know the pics don't do full justice to the situation.

How sad.  Those wildfires are terrible things.  Prayers for the victims from here.  Before I retired from the State Troopers up here there was a huge fire in this area--started by kids playing with fireworks--that burned 50,000 acres and destroyed many structures.  We had to patrol against looters and make sure people were evacuated out of the area.  It was all very surreal.  Fortunately no one was killed in the fire.

It's about 19k (@12 miles) as the magpies fly (no crows around here) but there's a mountain and a whole lot of cement in between. Barb was never in any danger from this one.

Thanks for the photos and information. The reports I read indicated the wind spread the fires rapidly, sadly in many cases faster than many people were able to flee. As Clampett noted, even sadder that the fire was intentional.

Don,  so sad and I am glad Barb was not in danger.  Must of been more stressful being so far from home.

Glad you got back home safely.  Hope your flight was better on your return trip home.  Wish I could of got away from work and met you at the airport for a quick visit.  Still waiting on what you did to your cell phone when you got home.
