Well it had to happen.... here come the Hybrid Scoots

Honda to market gas-electric hybrid bike from September

The PCX Hybrid, which relies on both an engine and a motor as power sources, is based on the PCX motorized scooter model with an engine displacement of 125cc.

Its fuel efficiency of 55 kilometers per liter of gasoline is not much different from that of an engine motorcycle, but the hybrid model allows smoother acceleration along uphill roads and in other situations.

Looks like an electric-only PCX is set for release in the Asian market as well...

Interestingly, the article mentions a "detachable and swappable battery system," with similarities to the one mentioned in a Kymco Ionex thread on this site not long ago.

Maybe, some day, when batteries can be made & disposed of "greener" and the electricity is produced "greener" but that day isn't here yet.

Really sounds like a Gigantic waist of time and weight.  While electric is smooth, the weight combined with a motor will kill it.  If you want smoother acceleration buy a twin cylinder motor.

In Europe, Honda has scooters that shut the engine down and restart on the twist of the throttle, just like cars do.

I'll have to look into that when I get back home, but how much gas do you need to save if you're getting 70mpg already?

Well.... all of us could diagnose the Stop part of it, but not many of us would likely get the Start part to work!

Well.... all of us could diagnose the Stop part of it, but not many of us would likely get the Start part to work!

I can imagine the stress the start and stop feature does to the engine.  Battery drain, starter/flywheel wear, starting your vehicle is the hardest thing a motor does.  Not sure the benefit in the long run.  I think its a way for California to scam out the snobby people's money

I don't know if the stop start feature stresses the  engine. My friend's Honda PCX 155 scooter is 4 years old done over 50,000 kms on it, only replaced the battery once on it ( very minuscule ) and still going strong. He uses the stop start feature in traffic everyday ( its his daily commute 30kms each way) and gets around 45kms a litre.

If my calculations are correct, 55 KM/liter is equal to 130 MPG. I would be interested in that.

Using conversion values from some web pages that can use numbers out to 14 decimal places,
the precise calculation comes out to 208.19764 MPG... Even so, 209 MPG is close enough even
if being optimistic an an infinitesimal way. That, since even the 55 Km/L may not be an exact figure.

The site I used lists 55 km/l works out to 129.3680 mpg(us)

As reference, my vanilla PCX gets 105-110 mpg

UGGH!!! Double DOH!! Me too. Therefore, the correct... er um, more correct calculation comes out to 129.36797 MPG
which is 1.9008 inches less per mile than the figure given by Cube.
