Bikes loaded.  I'll be on the road in about 20 minutes.  I'll update from the road when I have WiFi.

I rode up to North Carolina today.  I was planning on staying at Deal's Gap but changed my mind and ended up at Iron Horse.  I friend rode up with me to Deal's Gap and then headed home.  That's a pretty long ride but then he goes way faster on his Harley than you'd expect.

A few pictures from today:

No further word from mark or Darwin so I'm looking forward to meeting them tomorrow morning.

After a wet start this morning I had a great ride on some awesome roads today. I met up with my longtime riding buddy Steve and we are now at Blue Ridge Motorcycle campground.  I didn't stop to take many pictures and didn't get any action pictures today.  I'm really slacking off here.  I'll try to do better tomorrow.

I did take a few pictures today.

I don't take as many pictures when I'm leading a ride so tomorrow should be better.

Hey if you get this post, let me know if meeting at 900 would work for you. Our hotel has an omelette bar so we will have already eaten.

In that case, meet us at Blue Ridge Motorcycle campground.  Since there are so many campers here they will be serving breakfast.  The campground is about 10 minutes past the restaurant so we'll look for you a little past 9.

Steve and I started Monday with breakfast at the Campground.

That pancake was huge and very tasty.  Mark and Darwin showed up shortly after we finished eating.

Ready to roll.

Mark had put a route in his GPS and led us off.  Darwin was behind Mark followed by me then Steve.  I'm too cheap to buy a GoPro and too lazy to figure out how to edit and post videos so I still use a camera.  For action shots I ride with my right hand and shoot pictures with my left.  This was a bit of a challenge at the Pace Mark was riding but I got a few shots.

This was on 276.

.

.

At some point we stopped for gas and Steve, who had never seen scooters ridden the way mark and Darwin ride them, Made a comment something like:  "that's not a Tmax, that's a Mad Max"

Soon Mark led us on a road I had never ridden before.  It turned out to be a great road.  I think that's where the next pictures were taken.

At one point Mark missed a turn.  When we pulled over to turn around we took a short break, Since I knew the roads Mark asked me to lead for a while.  So I found Charlies Creek road and led the way.  This is one of my favorites so I might have run it at a "fun" pace.  There is a nice little park at the end and we took a break there.

The four of us all liked to ride at roughly the same pace and it turned out we had a lot of common interests so it turned into a pretty long break as we couldn't stop talking.

After the break Mark led off again as we rode 281.  If you like twisties this road is hard to beat.

.

We stopped at this place for lunch.

I took the lead again and led us to one of my favorite picture spots.

Using a different setting on my camera.

Another of my favorite picture spots:

.

.

.

As you can probably see from the pictures we were having a great ride.  Unfortunately later in the ride Darwin crashed.  He broke his leg and needed to be taken to the ER in an ambulance.  Darwin's a tough guy and handled the bad situation and pain very well.  Steve got us organized.  Mark and Steve rode to Maggie valley to get the truck and trailer.  I followed the ambulance to the ER.  Right after Darwin was loaded into the ambulance a bad thunderstorm hit and made thing more complicated in addition getting us wet.

They checked Darwin out at the ER and found a broken leg and some bruises but thankfully nothing else serious.  Mark and Steve got to the hospital just before they were ready to release Darwin.  We then all returned to Maggie Valley and got Darwin to his room.

It always sucks when someone crashes.   Despite the bad ending to the day I was very glad to have had the chance to ride with Mark and Darwin and get to know them a little.  Hopefully they are back home by now.  I hope to get the chance to ride with them again in the future.

I didn't see the crash but Steve did.  Darwin was not going that fast or riding above his ability.  We're not sure what happened.  Maybe a moment of inattention at just the wrong time.

Darwin was talking about making it down to Alabama in September.  I hope he heals fast enough to make it.

Mark will update you all a bit more.  Darwin is to have surgery tomorrow to put a rod in his leg, so send good thoughts his way.  He will have to stay in Asheville a little longer than planned :-(

Thanks for the pictures!

Darwin update.
Darwin and I are in the Smoky Mountains on what started out as a riding vacation.
Darwin crashed Monday and broke his leg. It's a compound fracture in 2 places with a twisting break.
He'll be getting a rod put in his leg Wednesday and will be staying at least one more day for therapy and observation. I'll be heading home Wednesday since there's nothing more I can do here. Darwin's wife is coming here to take him home some time later.
Darwin will be alright but he has some recovery to do. Sadly, I think this was our last trip to the Smoky Mountains. He won't be at the Rally in September since he will be recovering.
I can't thank Steve and Wynn (klaviator) enough for all their help. I told them to finish their ride but they would have none of that. Wynn went with Darwin to the hospital while Steve and I rode to the hotel, got the truck and trailer and then Darwin's bike. They were just finishing up with Darwin when we got the bike loaded. We drove to Sylva and picked Darwin up, literally, and went back to the hotel.  The guys then helped me move Darwin into the room, on a luggage cart no less. Then they helped me load my bike as well. I would have had a hell of a time doing all this without their help.
These are quality people and I'm truly glad I met them. I hope they make it to the rally in September.

By the way, later that night, Darwin's daughter, who is a nurse, insisted I take Darwin to the hospital in Asheville. He's there now waiting for the surgery, hopefully tomorrow.

Mark, I am also saddened to read of Darwin's injury. Although you appear to have support in place already, please contact me if needed. I expect to travel through Asheville late Wednesday afternoon relocating into the area. I will gladly alter my route to assist. Please convey my best wishes to Darwin.

Latest update on Darwin.
He got a rod or pin or something in his leg this morning. He's in some pain, but he's a tough old bird so he'll be OK.
They're keeping him for a couple more days for therapy in Asheville. I drove home today and unloaded the bikes and trailer. Darwin wants to ride home in the Denali, so his wife is heading to Asheville tomorrow in the truck. He should be heading home by Saturday if there's no more complications.
I just hope this isn't the end of his riding days. We've been riding together for 33 years.
