Maxi-Scoot Rally 2017

« on: March 06, 2018, 04:28:34 AM »

Bob and I got out yesterday for our first ride of 2018.  It hovered around 50 in the afternoon. It was nice and sunny which helped, along with our heated gear on low. We rode for about 5 hours stopping for lunch for a  total of 110 miles.  Had to get out of the city which is always a PITA.  It was nice getting back on two wheels again.  Last time we rode was the end of October.

Tonight we are getting rain sleet and snow. Possibly 2-4 inches.

I got out Sunday for a loop around the peninsula, and, you're right, it feels good.

Ventured to Florida Saturday for some orange juice. Temps hovered in the mid 60s but dropped rapidly at sunset. And of course, the ferry at Mayport.

I did my first ride of the year in January.  There was a warm weekend (at least warm by our Chicago standards and I had a business meeting in St Louis that weekend.  So I got the FJR out and rode down.  It hit sixty in St Louis that weekend.

On the other hand I wussed out last weekend.  I had another business meeting in St Louis and I left the bikes home.  The weather was tollerable for the bike as Cathy pointed out, but I had to work in Chicago Saturday morning and be in St Louis for a business meeting on Sunday and back in Chicago for work on Monday morning.  That added to the fact that I took the convertible.  I'd written a note on a JB post a couple weeks ago about buying a convertible.  Well I went and did it.  I flew to Tampa a week ago Saturday morning and bought a 2004 Toyota Solara Convertible.  It has 72,000 miles, only one owner before me and is pristine.  The only issue it had was the prior owner was more into looks then performance and he put these custom 20" wheels with ultra low profile tires.  That made the car handle like a pig and scrape the wheel wells on pot holes.  Not to mention that the tires had dry rot and cuts from the wheel wells.  So I bought 17" alloy wheels and new General tire all weather tires and sold the 20" wheels to the fellow who changed the wheels for me.  Other then that it drives and looks like a new car.

So I did get to take the convertible down the "Missouri Dragon" ("P" to "dd" to Rte 32 to Bixby).  was the first time that I did that route in a car.  Having four wheels and brand new tires with a five speed trans and 245 hp car it could fly through those roads.  I'm sure that I did it faster then I could on my bikes, but it was less fun even with the top down.

One of the big deal things is that next Saturday night-Sunday morning I think we go to daylight savings time!!! RIDING SEASON IS ALMOST AT HAND!!!

So enlighten this bubblehead about what kind of target an LGS is. And the ferry takes A1A across to Mayport.
Oh,and forgot the food porn from Sonny's BBQ.

No, sorry, I was on a LGS* not a SBB** so the "bubblehead" thing doesn't fit.

Sonny's really is a GREAT place to chow down.

At taught to me by my sea-daddy while sitting on the porch of the E-club down in Gitmo back in the 60's.

IS there anything better than the first ride of the season?  We had an 80 degree day a couple weeks ago.  I rolled the bike out and as soon as the quitting time bell rang, I was out of here.  My poor mother rolled up just as I was walking out.  I told her I had to ditch her cause it was time to ride.  Luckily she understood.  I got a couple hour ride in, which was heaven.

Every day I get up and say - ONE DAY CLOSER TO RIDING SEASON.

Glad everyone has been able to get out.

The 2-4 inches of snow they predicted didn’t happen. Thank god. Just a dusting more sleet than snow. Predicted cold for the next 10 days.

Cathy, I was glad about the lack of snow as well.  I'm trying to decide if I want to suffer the cold to take a weekend on the bike this week.

Another week (snort).  We are at 180% of normal snow pack and it is snowing now.  Riding season might start by May first   If this keeps up Going to the Sun Road may be closed through mid-July.

Hopefully this nasty winter will be over when we get back.

The day before was pretty good here in Alabama

May 1st of what year??

Ok, rubbing salt in the wound. We have rolling hills and lots of lovely green here, but those Jellystone mountains, Chief Joseph Pkwy, Going to the Sun Rd, Million Dollar Hwy, etc out west make me green with envy during the summer.

I was only 1/2 joking about GttS.  Anyone planning to travel to the Northern Rockies this summer might want to keep an eye on things.  A couple of years ago GttS opened 2nd week of July and there were a lot of upset tourists.  This year so far is worse.

I now have dirt showing on my driveway and about 60% of the road to the main highway.  Patience (grumble grumble).

Rode the Burgman a bit in January, had the Guzzi V7 out for a 70 mile spin last week, and I'm dusting off and charging up the old Aero right now, it's going to be mid-60's on Wednesday.

Sweet rides you've got there JB! Makes me want my Kawasaki back!

I almost sold the Honda recently, but the party who wanted to buy it was also in the process of buying her first house, so I figured, correctly, that she might decide to hold off on purchasing a motorcycle, which pleased me because I had been having a bad case of pre-seller's remorse about letting the Honda go. It's no longer for sale.

The Indian in the background will, and must, be sold this spring. I'm tired of paying for it, and keeping it blocks the purchase of other, less expensive bikes that I would like to have this year.

Teresa's Harley Deluxe is also 'on the block'.

We will keep my Guzzi V7, the Honda Aero 1100, and Teresa's BMW R1200, then, after the Indian is gone, I will go bike shopping.
