Let me apologize right up front .... this has nothing to do with scooters or motorcycles. But whereas the members of Maxi-Scoots forum have many other interests in all sorts of subjects, I want to let you all know of something of great historical significance as related to Halifax, Nova Scotia. This Wednesday morning at 9:04:35 marks 100 years since devastating Halifax Explosion took place. Up until the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, this explosion was the greatest man-made explosion in history. The media here are going crazy with facts of that day back in 1917. If interested in more info on this, A&E have this 48 minute documentary on the Explosion. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFg8ANIlOBwIt must have been a terrible time. About 2000 killed and 9000 injured. 35000 were made homeless. Boston very quickly sent help and each year since, Nova Scotia sends Boston a huge spruce tree for lighting on the Boston Commons for Christmas time, as a thank you for the help. My grandfather was part owner in a grain drying kiln on the Halifax waterfront. The building was destroyed and all, except he and his sister in law (the company's book keeper) were killed. Just wanted to share some local "news". Mike

I knew of this event but didn't know any of the details. Fascinating stuff. Did some internet research for other events like this one. Ever heard of Ripple Rock in BC Canada? One of the largest man made planned non nuclear explosions ever. Broadcast live on Canadian TV in 1958.

Hadn't heard of the Ripple Rock explosion. I was 5 years old then. Found the story through Goggle just now. That was an interesting story. Thanks. But I do recall seeing Sputnik fly over; and that was in October 1957.

I'm glad this found some interest here. The Nova Scotia Web cam showing the MacKay Bridge ..... https://www.novascotiawebcams.com/en/webcams/mackay-bridge/ also shows the narrows from Bedford Basin into Halifax Harbour. The site of the Explosion was just to the right of the bridge and very near to the power station stacks seen in a drone video of a container ship passing though the narrows into the basin to a container terminal. https://youtu.be/__xD8MJXyEcIn this video Dartmouth is on the left and Halifax on the right. The hill on the Halifax side was wiped out. The large white building that can be seen along the Halifax shoreline is the assembly building for the current shipbuilding project. My grandfather's kiln was a little beyond that area. Once the container ship is in the basin and turning towards the Fairview Container Terminal, you can get a look at the size of Bedford Basin ....the area where the ships would gather prior to leaving for the war overseas. My home is on the hill at the far end of the basin. Mike
