2009 Tmax500 with OODLES of UPGRADES!

Yep! They just did some road tests of the new (for us...) 2018 KYMCO Xciting 400i ABS in South Carolina, where the KYMCO US importer is.

https://ultimatemotorcycling.com/2017/05/27/2018-kymco-xciting-400i-abs-scooter-review-15-fast-facts/

This is the single-cylinder Maxi I've always hoped they would bring here. In head-to-head comparisons in Europe it killed the competition, the Yamaha Xmax400i, Piaggio X10-350, SYM400i. It was lighter, faster, handled better, braked better, LOOKED better and was easy and inexpensive to maintain. it quickly became the #1  selling Maxi in Spain, even outselling the Tmax.

Since Kymco has TWO new models in Europe (and the rest of the world minus North America...), The Downtown350i ABS and the new FLAGSHIP AK550 , the "old" 400i was now redundant, and we get it. Better late than never. Here it is in action:

https://vimeo.com/77173089

It will list at $5,999 and come in 4 colors. The obsolete Burgman 400 (AT $7,999!!!) and Majesty 400 now have something to replace them!

Well, I looked at the Kymco's back when I was in the market for a new scooter & to be honest I was underwhelmed by the quality of the body work. However, having talked with owners the mechanics are sound and they all seem to be happy.

But the look better than the X10? Not even close.

While I'm glad to see Kymco bring this to us, other than having the front only ABS and slightly better gas mileage, I see little to make me get rid of my obsolete Majesty. The price isn't bad, but I'll be keeping my money for now. Thanks for the info, though.

I've very exited about this. Not sure if they'll keep the Downtown 300i in the US market. I'm not ready to trade in mine, but the Xciting would be my first choice for my new bike.

Yeh!

They tested the 2018 AK550 up against the 2018 Tmax in Spain and it was a TIE, 51 points each...with the Kymco almost $3,000 LESS.

Here is a different test: The Kymco won 1 to 0!

Yep,
The Xciting 400, Xtown 300, & Like 150 are all here/coming soon.  Someone on the ADV board just picked up a 300, & my local dealer (Seattle) has a 400 on the floor.
The newer Xciting 500i's been here for a bit, I'm honestly not sure if they're going to continue it in light of the 400 arriving.
I do know they're killing the People GT300i, & DT300i in this country.

I was at my local dealer last week. He didn't know if/when the 400 would be available, and never heard of the AK550. I told him if he got a 550, I'd be there with cash in hand. He seemed to be quite satisfied selling a few 50s.

The Xciting 400i is now coming here, as it's redundant everywhere else, with the new 350 replacing it and 550 is now the flagship.. The 500 is going away..

Looks like the local island dealer is ordering some so will get a test ride. I was hopeful that the 550 was going to be available in the US market but so it goes.

My friend's shop in San Antonio has already sold one. Kymco's parts distribution is better than Vespa's. Oh yeah, the scooter isn't listed on KYMCO USA website yet.

Yeah, Kymco USA's website is pretty substandard.
And I wouldn't count on that 550 coming stateside unless they can sell it way cheaper than the Tmax.
Yamaha hasn't exactly set any sales records here with the Tmax, at least not at the $10,500 MSRP.

Yes, Yamaha is having a fire sale on 2015 Tmaxes. Me and 3 other people I know have bought one and we're all very happy with the bike. I paid $7000 for mine but I saw one for $6000 after I had mine. Better move fast. You won't regret it.

Unfortunately Hawaii doesnít carry any held over stock and transport to the island from the mainland is inherently expensive. So the 400 Xciting test ride is looking promising.

Just an update stopped into our local Honda Kymco dealer and Kris the store manager told me he expects to have the new 400 xciting on the showroom floor two weeks. I plan on a good test ride of up and down hills, twistys, hard braking and places to open it up.

Will generate ride report

Got the test ride in last Friday so here's some pics and general impressions:

I liked the overall look of the bike with the exception of the mirrors, somehow remind me of insect antennas sorry but they just stick out and are in an awkward position for my taste. I thought about aftermarket but its complicated as the turn signals are wired in. Moving on, fit on the panels seemed secure and trim fit nicely. The seat was a memory foam with a nonslip cover. I really liked the cargo space with dual hinge pistons as they are leaps better than the single weak Forza design.

Ergos are good with seating position distance to bars and knee clearance all good in fact its a little less cramped than the Forza, but not by much. What is noticeable is seat height. With 15 " front and 14 rear I can flat foot it but its taller than my Forza  and seat width was about the same. I'M 6'2" with a 33 " inseam. I was hoping to see the lighting being LEDs but this bike was Halogens as I understand it the model in the EU is LED so were getting brand x if that is true.

The clocks all digital and easy to read and appearantly has some tech features that I really didn't take time to study. The pocket door is somewhat small with an aux power outlet but not a lot in storage space. I doubt you could get a pair of gloves in there. I did not like the closure of the door it was cheap and not well designed. Bike is equipped with side and center stand. Found the side stand to be a little funky with a rather large wire loop welded to the leg but the center stand was beefy.

Ok now for the good stuff the motor is smooth and reminded me of my honda up to the point I hit the throttle, excelleration is quick and smooth. The bike is quicker 0-60 and delivers about 10 more MPHs with a good grade than my Forza. For a one lunger I was impressed. Riding position was comfortable being either flat footed on the floorboards or forward on the rake. Another plus for this bike is the weight being close to the Forza but delivering better HPs . The bike handles a little slower than my Forza and requires a little more push to the bars in the twistys but otherwise performs very smooth.  Suspension is smooth and it took the bumps better than my
Forza.  Windsheild i found useless and would be one of my first mods. The bike has a nice engine decelleration that help me stay off the brake in the turns. Braking power with the dual front disc was smooth with good stopping power. Turn signal has also a clicker that's loud enough to hear with your lid on to remind you to turn your signal off after completing your turn.  Left hand control also has a passing button that will make you more visible going around cagers. Overall I liked the bike   and the speed and extra power just still having a hard time with the mirrors lol.

Leg protection in comparison?
The step through appears to be lower than the Forza......could you tell?

its a little higher for the step through Larry than the Forza, otherwise leg protection is the same. My bike was getting a new lower panel on or I would have done a side by side shot!

Nice report Kelly!  Thanks.  You can/will get used to the mirrors ... the windshield  - maybe not so.
 Price ?  About $7500 USD  ??

I once spoke with a Kymco dealer in New Orleans who described the Xciting 500 as well named -- because it was an exciting machine to ride.  I expect the same is true of the 400.

$6895 Mike. Not a bad price point for what you get. I have to admit the extra HPs are turning my head a bit and had the AK 550 been available to the US I think Id go for it.  But I'm not there yet on the 400.
