Let's Ride!!!!!!

« on: August 11, 2017, 03:20:12 AM »

We are leaving Sunday, riding to Davenport, IA.  On Monday we leave and ride to the Machine Shed so Pete can pick up a cinnamon roll, after that we ride 12 miles west so I can see the World's Largest Truck Stop :-)  I love truck stops!  From there ride up to the Dells.  Tuesday will be a leisurely 180 mile into Minocqua.

Total miles 640.  We could do it in two days easily but we figured we would take our time going up and enjoy!

Well, I'm probably taking the most out-of-the-way route to get to Minocqua.
From Toronto I'm headed north to Sudbury, west to Sault Ste Marie for the first night, then a big day from Sault to Thunder Bay the second day. Long ride up and around the top of Superior (I'll dip my toes in the north side for ya Maggie). Then the 3rd day from Thunder Bay to Deluth, lunch with a friend, and on to Minocqua. I just hope it is reasonable weather. Not fun to ride that far in the rain.

You hit a weak point for me Maggie ..... cinnamon rolls !!!!  Found the ones at Costco, here, are even better than they look.  Best part - they don't seem to add any weight either.  Have Pete look at this one .... this is one of the best things when skiing at Sunday River. A stop at the North Peak lodge is a must for their cinnamon roll -- or as they call it, for good reason:  "sticky bun".  They even have a squeeze bottle of icing on the counter --- just if you need more.  YUM !!!  Do they have wonderful cinnamon rolls at the truck stop ?  Bonus if they do !!

Diane's working Monday so I'll run the camper up there & come home. If you would like to stop by Wausau & pick us up on Tuesday that would be cool. We live right off of exit 191B (Sherman St). We could go a senic route or directly your choice. Its only 70 miles from here.

Thanks, I already have a route set and we are skirting to the west of Wausau.  I have a few big ball of twine places to see ;-)

John, check with the Badger to make sure they have tie downs for your Scooter.  You may need to bring your own.  Be safe.

Head straight up, take a left at Lexington, a right somewhere around Joan's place sometime Monday, reckon to be skirting Rich's house near the clock striking Tuesday and Minacqua around first light + or - 8 to 24 hours if all goes well. No mammoth balls of twine, skillets or caverns on the agenda, just burning fossil fuel at a disgraceful pace while southward reflections expediently recede in the mirrors. Other than hopes of enjoying a few days riding Wisconsin for the first time, seeing some folks, meeting others the only other agenda item is stopping near Joan's place on the way home to finally visit with my great great great grandfather.
Wishes for safe travel and enjoyment to all!

Our plan is to leave Monday and drive (trailering) something over half way (maybe Beloit, WI) by heading west at Indy and then North at Bloomington, IL, to avoid going through Chicago (and all manner of angst - adds 40 miles but only about 20 minutes, and that's if Chicago traffic is "normal").

As a lifelong Chicagoan avoiding Chicago traffic is generally a good idea.  At the same time when coming from Louisville you would probably be better off taking I 65 to Indianapolis and taking 465 northwest around Indianapolis.  Then stay on I 65 to I 80.  Take I 80 to I 39 and then north up to I 90 at Rockford.  You only catch a small amount of Chicago traffic on the I 80 from very northeast Indiana across the very south suburbs of Chicago.  Unless you are going to hit I 80 in the heart of the rush hour this is usually open traffic and saves you many miles as the hypotenuse is shorter then the legs.  There is construction on I 65 at Lafayette and near Lowell, but it's usually not too bad.  If you really want to tour on the way I'd go up through the Hoosier National Forest and French Lick, Indiana 37 I think it is and then head over to the Mississippi from Indianapolis on I 70 and cathc Missouri 79 up to Hannibal.Somewhere just north of Quincy you can catch US 52 to ride the bluffs on the Iowa side to Lacrosse , WI and along the Wisconsin side of the Mississippi till you can cut across.

So many ways to go and only one trip, but there is the way home.

Final route  (I hope)

Day One  Sunday Home to Davenport   Departure Time: 8-:30-9am - Total Miles: 256 miles

https://goo.gl/maps/t9HixV9TafF2

This day is about getting to Davenport, nothing special planned unless we see aliens landing in Farmer Brown’s cornfield.  Highlights of the day will include corn and more corn.

Day Two Monday Labor Day  Davenport to the Dells  Departure Time 8am  - Total Miles: 250

https://goo.gl/maps/dwcrHvg5LLD2

Breakfast in Hotel (Free)
Stop: Machine Shed - Pick Up Cinnamon Roll for Pete (this will be quick)  6 miles from hotel
Stop: Iowa 80 - World’s Largest Truck Stop - spend about an hour here?  9 miles from Machine Shed
Iowa 80 to Great River Rd -  76 mile of boring….
Stop: Gas stop Before hitting Great River Road
Ride up Great River Road between Dubuque and Marquette - 55 miles of fantastic!
Stop along the Great River Rd @  Pikes Peak and view confluence of Mississippi and Wisconsin River. Slight hike down from parking lot on a paved trail.  (from entrance to Great River Rd to Park is 50 miles)
Cross the Mississippi - Stop at Welcome to WI sign then there is a MUST stop about a block away.  I’m not saying what but it is freaking hilarious and picture worthy!  ..and they have cheese curds!!! - 6 miles from park
Ride along the Wisconsin River then a turn north to see a Big Mouse with Cheese then head into the Dells. 103 miles.

Day Three Dells to Minocqua - Total Miles 215 miles - Departure Time 8:30ish

https://goo.gl/maps/5erviaHUMD82   - Approx route having issues with Google Maps not liking MY way.

Breakfast at Hotel (Free)
Stop Iron Robot - Photo Op - 35 miles from hotel
Stop Ship Rock  - Photo Op -12 miles from robot
Stop - Gas Stop/Stretch in Wisconsin Rapids - 31 miles from Ship Rock
Stop Meridian Marker - Photo Op -  54 miles from Wisconsin Rapids
Stop Chicken Stop  - See a chicken about some fried cheese curds.  - 20 miles from marker
Ride along the Wisconsin from Merrill to Tomahawk. Claimed by Harley Riders as the best ride in the state… so take that for what it’s worth.  Looks nicer than 51, that’s for sure. Stop along way to see a Moose about cheese curds then head into Minocqua.  From the chicken to the moose is 30 miles.
From the Moose to Minocqua is a nice ride of 33 miles into The Pointe Resort just before Minocqua “proper”  Stop in Tomahawk for gas.

Tuesday night meet up will be at 7pm  Otto's Beer Garten  509 Oneida St, Minocqua, WI 54548  Neat place to hang and wait as others filter in form around the globe! They will have cheese curds!
