« on: October 11, 2016, 05:11:23 PM »

Lake In The Clouds Thursday 9-7-17

Time: 9:00am Kick Stands up and rolling at 9:10am
Meet at: Krist Station just north of Pointe Resort - 208 Oneida St, Minocqua, WI 54548

This will be a longer ride at 213 miles but itís not technical nor twisty like we did in VA. So itís picking up and putting the miles down easily

https://goo.gl/maps/Bp1V5KtLrVB2

Stops

--Merriweather (66 miles) Stretch/Pick Up Water/Snack before going to Lake in the Clouds

--Lake Superior - Stop at a roadside park so we can put our toes in Lake Superior. Please note this is about 2 miles after I make the left turn to head near the lake.  The pull off is VERY sandy looking so be aware!  Might be able to stay on road side in a single file.  We will know when we get there.  Letís do this stop in about 15 minutes.  Get pictures and go :-)

--Lake in The Clouds - Spend 45 minutes here

--Ontonagon - Lunch at Syl Cafe for patsies!!  Thereís a few other choices in town to eat but Iím not even considering those.  If you want to google lunch spots in Ontonagon knock yourself out.  Iíve come here for the patsies and paczkis!!

We will leave 70 minutes after we get here.  There is a gas station just south of Sylís Cafe. Use your time to fill up.  We will regroup at Syl and leave.

--Gas Stop in Watersmeet at the Casino.  Taking a stretch break and use their clean bathrooms.  If you want to run in and put a quarter in and try your luck know we arenít staying long!  If you are on a hot streak and want to stay knock yourself out, itís easy to get back to Minocqua.

Jesse and I did a ride to there a couple years ago. The abandoned copper mines are cool to see, as well as Houghton and Ontonagon. As long as they're not buried in snow.  Zoom in to see the measurement!

I'd love to ride all the way to Copper Harbor but it's just not doable.

Ummm picking up snacks for Lake in the Clouds might not be a good idea.  I was reading on their website about bear bags etc... then Vic sent me this.

BTW, bears are common at the Lake parking area. My brother saw a bear pull a drivers side window out, get inside the car and destroy the interior of the car.  Good idea to not have an smelly food on the bikes.

Maggie:
You are correct about Syl's in Ontonagon. I have been there several times and it is unquestionably THE best place in town to eat.  The pasty's, the pastries, and the whitefish are all excellent!

Vic mentioned it's $10 a bike to get into Lake in the Clouds.

That was in 2010, last time I was there. Hopefully by now MAYBE Michigan has come to it's senses and changed that.

Of course, the group could leave half the scooters outside the park and ride double past the toll booth.  :D

I believe there is a little pavilion at the LOTC parking area with picnic tables. Bears are not much of a concern at the parking areas. Yes, they are abundant there (I go backpacking through this area) but not to the point of worrying about them.

I'm attaching the GPS file for the Thursday ride.  It's about a 214 mile ride but it's not like a VA 214 mile ride ;)  Nice and relaxing.  Please look over the route and see if I have any glaring errors... like a gravel road.

I recommend a good breakfast, as lunch will be a tad later than noon today.

I have plans to make a couple of stops along the way to Lake in the Clouds so there will be opportunities to pick up a snack if you need one.

The second stop I plan to make is right before we go up to Lake in the Clouds.  There is a very short walk to Lake Superior from here.  I will be walking back there.

Lake in the Clouds has an entry fee of $9 per bike.  If you do not wish to go up you can hang down at the bottom around the place we stop before going up the MT. Just let me know so I know to stop and pick you up!

There is a short walk out to the overlook.  About a 1/10th of a mile. It climbs about 45ft then drops 35 ft to the lookout. There are public restrooms.

After Porcupine Mt, we will head to lunch in Ontonagon.   I'm going to Syls.  I research no where else.  If doesn't sound like your cup of tea look around.   There is a gas station right near Syls we will gather back there.  During the 90 minutes we are allowing in Ontonogon, I personally plan to use some of that time to see the lighthouse.

Use your time as you see fit. Heck, you want to stay longer than I do, knock yourself out,  or if you want to ride a different way back, do it!

On the way back will make a stop

Lake of the Clouds is a lake located in Ontonagon County in the Upper Peninsula of the U.S. state of Michigan within the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park.  We were there in August, 1975.  Here's what it looked like then.

The lake, the lake !

The overlook (my sweet bride in the upper left).

The highway leading to the overlook abuts Lake Superior.  If things haven't changed in 42 years, you can stop and dip your toes ... fair warning, in August the water felt freezing cold (there's my gal again).

Water temp there today is upper 50s.  Saw an article that said Lake Superior has warmed 4.5 degrees since 1979 so when we were there it might well have been low 50s.
