Someone I work with wants to get a cheap Sportster.  At what point did they get...

ABS?
EFI?
Tubeless tires?
Belt drive?

Also, any easy way to tell an 883 and a 1200 apart?

I tried searching on Google and such...but there is so much out there it's like finding one fish in an aquarium.

The pre-86 models are Ironhead engines.  '86 and later are Evo's.  The 1200's got a belt in 1991, they all got belts by '93.  The Sporty's never got the Magnetti Marelli injection that the early injected Big Twins had.  They didn't switch the Sporty's to EFI until 2007.

ABS, I'm not sure but I think only in the last couple years they've had that and it's optional, not standard.

Tubeless tires I'm not sure either.  My wife's '79 XLCH had cast wheels but tube type tires on it.  I'm pretty sure any cast wheel is ok for tubeless, but there may have been a transition there where what was available from the tire manufacturers determined whether or not the tires had tubes.

The easiest way to tell them apart is the fact that the 883 says 883 on the air cleaner and the 1200 says 1200 on it.  And you can put the 1200 jugs on the 883 bottom end because they're both the same.

So there is no way to tell the 1200 & the 883 apart-other than the 1991 & 92's being chain-drive-except for the badging?

The only difference between the 883 and 1200 Sportster is their emblems on the air cleaner that indicate which model they are. They are actually built with the same exact parts and there is no way you can tell just by looking if a model is an 883 or a 1200 aside from the emblem or looking at the serial number.
