Last Sunday the wife and I were returning from a little trip across town, by a slightly different route than usual, when we came upon a panorama of Athens we'd never seen before regardless that we've lived here for 40 years, were less than 2 miles from home, drove within a quarter mile of the place frequently, and were still in the middle of town!

To have come upon this vista without a camera reminded me that our "Things-You-See-When-You-Don't-Have-A-Camera" camera had given up the ghost some time last summer so Monday I did a little research and bought a Nikon's L28 20Mp, fit in the scooter model. Today I went back and shot this panorama. There are 5 exposures stitched together using some software that came with the camera! It's a bit on the expensive side but it's easy to use and does a pretty good job. Panorama Maker by ArcSoft will will work with just about everybody's photos if you follow the shooting directions. http://www.arcsoft.com/panorama-maker/ (No, I don't own stock in ArcSoft!  )

So... here's the small version and the full sized 20,000x3600 pixel version can be d/loaded from my site http://www.imagesby.me/personal/athens_panorama.jpg.

Thanks. Athens is standing about 4.5M with an average height of a building at less than 5 floors. What you see here is about 1/4 (if that much).

I want to take the big Nikon out and try it again with some better optics.

Great picture.  Thanx for sharing.

Is that the Acropolis over on the left on the hill?

Technically I think you are both right.  The Parthenon is part of the Acropolis.

Yes, that's the Acropolis (High-City) in the mid-ground at the far left of the shot and, yes, the Parthenon is the largest building up there.

I've been trying to get back to redo the shot with the big camera just to see if/how much more detail I can get out of it but we've had Africa dust covering the city for the last 4 days.

Great photo, beautiful city! The Parthenon is in Nashville, surprised to discover there is one in Athens, doesn't look finished. Can't believe them people in Georgia are building a copy!  Uhhhh, never mind should have used Google first, Greece. Yea, Go Dogs!

I think there are 3 or 4 copies around the world, none of which have quite gotten it right. I've not seen any of the knock-offs though.
