Let's Ride!!!!!!

« on: August 03, 2012, 06:17:48 PM »

I know a lot of people will not be in until the afternoon but some will be there Thursday.

I have planned a small ride down to Hershey, PA.  There is a Visitor's Center and Theme Park.  I just plan to go to the visitor's center and grab a bit to eat.  If anyone wants to do the theme park they are more than welcome.

Here is the route we will use there and back.

On the way down we will stop for a stretch just outside of Halifax, there is a Shell gas station on the right.

Leave time will be 9:30.  Everyone should be gassed and ready to go.

I am still doing research on where a stop will be on the way back.

This should put us back to Steel Steeds about 3-3:30pm

Maggie, just north of the "C" marker in your map is the town of Marysville. Looks like you'll pass through the town on Route 11/15. There is a Sheetz convenience store on the east side of the road near Marysville, the same side of the road you'll travel on the way back. At that point, you'll be past the heaviest Harrisburg traffic. Sheetz has fuel, food, (usually) clean restrooms, and a very large parking area. I'll offer that as a suggestion for your return trip stop; we have used this place before and it was quite nice.

I stooped in that station for gas on my way home from buying the Burgman.  It is highly sufficient for the purpose.  I even met a very nice guy over there who had some variation on a FZ1 that gave me some good advice about roads.

Oh forgot mention.  What we will do is when we get to Chocolate World we will agree to a 2 hour time limit.  Do what ya want, shop eat etc.... after 2 hours we will go back to Steel Steeds.

While there are some aspects to Chocolate World that cost money, there are free things as well.

I've attempted to load the posted Thursday and Friday routes into Garmin's Mapsource.  If you have Mapsource and a Garmin GPS that accepts route/waypoint downloads from Mapsource you should be able to use my gbd file.  It can be accessed at http://www.lsvl.info/MaxiRally.gdb.  There is no text at this location so your browser should simply ask if you want to open or save the file.  I'd suggest saving it and then opening with Mapsource, but if you choose open your computer should make the association and start Mapsource.

The routes in the Mapsource file appear to match those posted but I haven't done a detailed review.  If you see any deviation from what's posted, please advise.  Mapsource WOULD NOT route the left turn in Jersey Shore from Tiadaghton to Woodward, so you'll simply have to ignore the loop it put there.  These glitches don't happen often but I've seen other locations where Mapsource simply would not route as directed.

A caution - I've found that sharing gbd files generally works well as long as you don't recalculate a route.  Mapsource's recalculations are made based on the routing preferences an individual user has set in their computer or GPS.  If user B's settings are different than user A's, when user B recalculates a route prepared by user A, the resulting route may well be different.  It'll hit the same waypoints, but not necessarily the same roads.  If you inadvertantly recalculate a route in Mapsource (or your GPS does it automatically), the simplest fix I know of is to reload the file/route and start over.

On the way to Hershey there is an interesting sight in the Susquehanna River.  Will be to dangerous to stop and get a picture but I will slow and point out the sight!

Just wondering what time the Saturday ride begins and if there is anyone who might be riding on Sunday. Looks like O might be the only PA resident who could quite possibly do a day trip.
Thanks TRL
