Don't sweat the small stuff...it's all small stuff

« on: July 23, 2012, 02:08:21 AM »

Just got home from spending the past 10 days back in Idaho to attend a UMCI rally there.  Man was it hot!  Thursday in Kamiah at the rally site, it was 111 degrees out, with a ton of humidity.  Several folks came down with rather serious cases of heat stroke.  I went up Monday and felt like I was going to freeze to death going up until it warmed up.  On Tuesday some of us went on a fun ride, but it was 100 degrees by the time we got back.  I left on Wednesday, but I was beat from all the heat.  Not my cup of tea, that's for sure.

When I got home, it was 61 degrees and mostly cloudy, but very pleasant out, and everything is green instead of dead brown.  What a relief.  All I can say is, if you have to ride in the high heat, make sure to keep well hydrated, and avoid soft drinks with caffeine, as well as coffee and tea, even iced tea.  Just good old plain water is the ticket.  Also, keep your head covered as you lose a ton of body heat through the head.  And even if tempted, (and boy is it tempting) wear your protective gear to keep you skin covered up to avoid sunburn.  It may feel good to wear just a tee shirt and (shudder) shorts, but don't do it.

Again, I had fun and got to meet up with a lot of friends from Idaho and Oregon, but the heat was oppressive.

Ride safe out there.

I'm not one to complain about summer weather because here in Wisconsin winters can get to be real cold & long. I appreciate warm weather & being able to ride my bikes.
However its been to hot for too long! Its been unusally hot here. middle 90's to even 100+ degree days. Its been going on for about 3 weeks now. Usually were lucky to see 90's for 3 days all summer!
Should of seen it coming with the warm spring we had. Well @ least we don't shovel heat!!!

eastern Ontario usually has about two weeks of what I call hot, although those in the south might snicker, but this year has been ridiculous.

Glad you had a good time.

Our heat this summer has been crazy stupid.    We have no relief in sight this week :(

No complaints about sweating here.  I'd much rather sweat than have to shovel and freeze!

Ya'll come on out to Oregon. Its been perfect riding weather here. Mid 70's to mid 80's, partly cloudy to sunny with just light rain occasionally. Gotta love the Northwet (Alaska too). Big fires in eastern Or. but thats the desert. I avoid that stuff if I can.

Until this year our all time record for the most days of 100 degrees or more was 7. Today it is supposed to hit 100 for the 13th time this summer and they are predicting more hot and dry all week..

Unlike the folks in the Mid West, we have had a somewhat cool summer here in North Texas.  It went above 100 for 4 days the first week in July and it has been above 100 the last 5 days with Saturday being the hottest.  It officially hit 107 in Dallas and 109 in Gainsville up close to where Robin and I were riding Saturday.  Other than those days it has stayed in the mid to upper 90s for the most part.  Around here that is a fairly cool July.

Personally I like hot, dont turn on the AC till it hits 90, but it has been a little too warm this july although, I didnt turn the air on until the 4th, weve had a good dozen days at the 100 mark so far,,add in that almost constant 100% humidity and it gets miserably quick...Rog

11 days 105 degress or more and we have not hit the dog days of summer yet.  The Meramec River is suffering... as are many things. Pete and I rode down last night and walked the river bed.  Not often you get to walk someplace where there should be 30 feet of water over your head.

Looks like most of the lakes around here last summer.

I heard on the news that the Mississippi is low enough now that the channel has narrowed to one way barge traffic now in many places.  That is going to slow up barge traffic and probably add to the other price increases this years mid west drought will cause.

I spoke to a man this morning and he said he took the train on Wednesday when it was 108 degrees from Springfield, MO to St. Louis.  Normally a fast train ride and it ended up being a slow one as the train was constantly having to do 15mph at certain spots because the tracks were moving due to the heat!

Yes that sometimes happens around here in the summer.  The heat can cause the rails to warp so the trains have to go slower over them.

We have been fortunate this summer with the weather compared to most of the country. We just got back from a 2800 mile road trip on the Goldwing that included Pheonix, Las Vegas and crossing Nevada from south to Reno. The hottest day was the day going to Pheonix from LA crossing the desert at 106, the other 2 days we spent there were in the 90's, with threats of monsoon rains, guess we brought the wet weather with us. Las Vegas and the rest of Nevada was also in the 90's and pretty pleasant for the most part. Now back in the Pacific NW it is back to 70's and cloudy, business as usual. I am not complaining this time, as most of country is suffering with crazy heat and drought.

They like to show pictures of the warped rails on the evening news.  Kind of like those eggs frying on the sidewalk or cookies baked in a car pictures they also like to run.

Cookies?  Cookies?  I don't care where they baked 'em, I love cookies.  Especially oatmeal-raisin ones.
Yesterday it was in the mid-70's here, but it felt like 85 or more.  That's something unique to Alaska, I think.  Everyone thinks that it feels much warmer than it actually is.

Went for a ride day before yesterday and Mt. McKinley could be seen.  It's only visible approximately 30% of the time as it generates its own weather.  It was 75 degrees out.
