Mine opinion is it is nothing special and certainly doesn't hold a candle to most things we post here.

What makes it so special?? ....it just sold for 4.3 million dollars.

The print that sold must have something that's completely lost in the  reproduction.

Or maybe huge magnification reveals the purchaser somewhere in the frame in a compromising situation.

Austere..........????????

I think some people have too much money.

I personally have never understood why/how some artists get to where they are. I think it is how they portray their works to gullable people. The "IN" croud type of thing.

Here I am buying nice expensive camera equipment and spending time and money going to photography classes, and all along I could have produced million $ photos with a point'n'shoot camera, PhotoShop - no, Gimp, and no clue at all about composition or exposure.  I'm going to tell my photo instructor about this.  He's going to be so embarrassed

I will say that if I took and submitted that photo to any photography forum or class for critique, I would most assuredly be criticized mercilessly for centering the horizon, most likely for being a bunch of horizontal lines running off both ends of the photograph and ambiguous subject matter.

4.3 million aside, I'll reserve my thoughts on this specific photograph until I see it mounted in full resolution but the main thing I get from it concerning photography is something every picture taker should consider. Learn from any source available, pay attention to the experienced but in the end screw conventional wisdom, follow your vision and when met with criticism remember this 4.3 million photo.

It's horrible!  The horizon is up around the top third, it has a subject, it's interesting, good gosh, how could you show that thing in public?

I tried it on my photo teacher tonight.  He was so non-committal, I could tell he thought maybe I had taken it and was proud of it.  He did allow that the horizon appeared to be smack in the middle.  What is it?  It's the Rhine, I said.  He said That looks like a trail down there.  I said Yes, and that's a cloudy sky, and it's been shopped to take out some other stuff,  the interesting stuff.

When I told him the price, he turned a little pale.

I would really like the photo had it not been photoshopped to remove parts of the image.  Not because I think it is high art rather that finding that kind of balance in nature isn't always easy.  It has a surreal vibe about it.  I find it hard to grasp the value on images like this, especially when they sell in the millions.

Maggie it would be interesting to place your photo in the gallery alongside this doctored photo and slap this artist's name on it.  Curious if the art buying public would find it equally valuable, I know some would.
