Steve, can you put together a proposed ride route to Centralia? w/ the bumper boats?

Prior to the discussion of covered bridges and bumper boats, I mapped out these two fairly direct routes to and from Centralia. Originally, I was using MapQuest but really like the embedding feature in Google Maps that I have been using as of today. The outbound and inbound routes calculate to just over an hour in Google Maps, a few minutes more than MapQuest.

Outbound to Centralia, version 1
http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=Chillisquaque,+PA&daddr=40.86119,-76.79111+to:40.82369,-76.58562+to:Centralia,+PA&hl=en&sll=40.89589,-76.59415&sspn=0.420419,0.891953&geocode=FXO8cAIdMEpr-yldyUP1axPPiTF53BZjM_OeuA%3BFQZ-bwIdukJs-yktNlZk7WrPiTFAg9_QKVznqQ%3BFYrrbgIdbGVv-ykHWplfcGfPiTEx-ZiXQdChZQ%3BFZ6fbgId6CJz-ynPxJT-vozFiTHDbnh_TuZ7Dw&mra=dpe&mrsp=2&sz=11&via=1,2&z=11

Inbound from Centralia, version 1
http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=Centralia,+PA&daddr=40.98678,-76.65081+to:40.9746251,-76.7515643+to:Chillisquaque,+PA&hl=en&sll=40.881852,-76.598053&sspn=0.420508,0.891953&geocode=FZ6fbgId6CJz-ynPxJT-vozFiTHDbnh_TuZ7Dw%3BFZxocQIdxmZu-ykX786rBnDPiTElFoqS7CAXdg%3BFSE5cQIdNN1s-yldoifQ6W3PiTGGZ6UjHwlq6w%3BFXO8cAIdMEpr-yldyUP1axPPiTF53BZjM_OeuA&mra=dpe&mrsp=2&sz=11&via=1,2&z=11

My original goal was to re-use the same roads as little as possible, and it only occurs near Steel Steeds and Centralia in version 1 of each ride route. So far, I have not changed "Outbound to Centralia, version 1." Just my opinion, but making the Centralia the first stop, and getting there fairly early in the day should work best.

My next post will alter "Inbound from Centralia, version 1" to take us to Catawissa and Elysburg, near a number of covered bridges and Knoebel's. Then we can really fine tune the route to include all of the intended ride features and locations.

Before then, I'm curious to know if the maps load and display correctly on other members' computers. It seems to work well on mine, but it's the first I've tried this.

Thanks very much! This alteration to "Inbound from Centralia, version 1" takes the return route through or near both Catawissa and Elysburg.

Inbound from Centralia, version 2
http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=Centralia,+PA&daddr=40.87229,-76.40485+to:40.93615,-76.44893+to:40.9039,-76.49448+to:40.8756,-76.51243+to:40.98678,-76.65081+to:40.9746251,-76.751564+to:Chillisquaque,+PA&hl=en&sll=40.881852,-76.598053&sspn=0.420508,0.891953&geocode=FZ6fbgId6CJz-ynPxJT-vozFiTHDbnh_TuZ7Dw%3BFWKpbwIdjidy-ymhbkoy1IvFiTGGjezMpaugVw%3BFdaicAIdXntx-ymPEAKwOojFiTFtnniPrz2AWQ%3BFdwkcAIdcMlw-ynTG2HhN2LPiTFII82xylbJNQ%3BFVC2bwIdUoNw-ylpMvpremHPiTFCsqzVQezWNg%3BFZxocQIdxmZu-ykX786rBnDPiTElFoqS7CAXdg%3BFSE5cQIdNN1s-yldoifQ6W3PiTGGZ6UjHwlq6w%3BFXO8cAIdMEpr-yldyUP1axPPiTF53BZjM_OeuA&mra=dpe&mrsp=4&sz=11&via=1,2,3,4,5,6&z=11

This adds some distance but only a few minutes to the ride, without stops. But this route is more rural (sounds silly, it's all pretty much rural) and uses fast roads. Soon after leaving Centralia, the northbound ride on Route 42 before reaching Numidia goes down a mountain on a long, straight section of road which should be a thrill for throttle-happy riders.

Next comes the cool part of adding covered bridges to our ride route.

Thanks, Maggie and Dan!

I'll stop here for now, but there are more bridges to add! Also, breaking the return trip into two parts, Centralia to Elysburg and Elysburg to Steel Steeds, is looking like the way to go.

Thanks, but goodness this is fun! A few tweaks on the route near Catawissa to eliminate some route duplication and keep the bridges...

Over the last couple of months, I have altered some proposed routes and came up with some new options. Also, I have set up an extended route that would ultimately make use of all driveable covered bridges in Columbia County and several in Northumberland County, which is closest to Steel Steeds.

The first trip has a route change after I found a covered bridge near the route from Steel Steeds to Centralia. The route now passes through Elysburg, which figures nicely into an optional return route (which will appear in a later post). Please paste the following into a new page in your browser to display the route.

http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=Chillisquaque,+pa&daddr=N40+52.24++W76+43.39+to:40.8690582,-76.711075+to:40.87749,-76.69701+to:Centralia,+PA&hl=en&sll=40.867639,-76.7274&sspn=0.052705,0.111494&geocode=FXO8cAIdMEpr-yldyUP1axPPiTF53BZjM_OeuA%3BFQujbwIdIUxt-w%3BFcKcbwIdXXtt-yndXbMWoGnPiTGpkYUVdE2yWg%3BFbK9bwIdTrJt-ylttOxmBWnPiTEkK3l8zVbN-A%3BFZ6fbgId6CJz-ynPxJT-vozFiTHDbnh_TuZ7Dw&vpsrc=0&mra=dpe&mrsp=3&sz=14&via=2,3&t=m&z=14

Location "B" is Keefer Station Bridge, a covered bridge that I had missed in an earlier version of the proposed ride to Centralia. This is a fairly quick ride. Most of the covered bridges would appear in the proposed second and third rides. I believe all of these bridges survived Tropical Storm Lee last month and will look for more information on them.

Would you guys mind doing me a huge favour.

When you are listing locations where you've been riding or plan on riding, would you please put in what STATE or PROVINCE it's in.

I was looking all over the map around Centralia, Washington state before I realized this Centralia was on the other side of the country.

I check out locations in my road atlas, for possible future trips,  but its kinda tough not knowing what state I'm looking for.

Thank you one and all.

Yesterday, I posted the proposed first section of the ride in September 2012 that would take us from Steel Steeds to Centralia. Presumably, we would have an extended stop in Centralia, at least enough to take in some of the remaining features of the town and the destroyed section of highway. The second section is from Centralia to Knoebel's Grove, site of the bumper boats mentioned last summer. Please paste the following into a new page on your browser to display the route, which lies entirely within Columbia County, Pennsylvania:

http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=Centralia,+PA&daddr=40.899245,-76.3737089+to:N40+54.08+W76+23.67+to:40.920462,-76.4429539+to:N40+54.63++W76+26.40+to:N40+54.40++W76+27.59+to:N40+54.38++W76+28.37+to:N40+52.69++W76+29.00+to:N40+50.85++W76+30.44+to:40.8561508,-76.5058318+to:N40+52.05++W76+30.49+to:40.8712148,-76.5115835+to:N40+52.63++W76+30.33&hl=en&ll=40.871469,-76.42004&spn=0.098394,0.222988&sll=40.860045,-76.47171&sspn=0.049205,0.111494&geocode=FZ6fbgId6CJz-ynPxJT-vozFiTHDbnh_TuZ7Dw%3BFa0ScAIdNKFy-ym3dh8jMInFiTFcRMpRQf_C0Q%3BFdUacAId_E9y-w%3BFY5lcAIdt5Jx-ylzhX4czYnFiTFJPXlW_XpM6Q%3BFaQ-cAIdQJ5x-w%3BFasvcAIdx1Bx-w%3BFV0ucAId_x1x-w%3BFVfAbwId-_Rw-w%3BFYxIbwIdO5dw-w%3BFVZqbwIdGZ1w-ynZ5jo9BmHPiTHYGWHcu8lGYw%3BFayWbwId-ZNw-w%3BFS6lbwIdoYZw-yl9CBK0c2HPiTHCnjzy-kpDLw%3BFW-8bwIdZJ5w-w&vpsrc=6&mra=ls&via=1,3,9,11&t=m&z=13

A – Centralia
B – Snyder Bridge
C – Davis Bridge
D – Esther Furnace Bridge
E – Parr’s Mill Bridge
F – Johnson Bridge
G – Krickbaum Bridge
H – Richard’s Bridge
I – Knoebel’s Grove Bridge

This proposed route, like the ride from Steel Steeds to Centralia, is just over an hour. It includes travel on eight covered bridges in an area bordered by the towns of Centralia on the southeast, Catawissa to the north, and Elysburg to the west. Bridge "I" is Knoebel's Grove Bridge, which is within the amusement park's boundaries, but available to traffic. After crossing this bridge, we would be moments away from parking for the second stop.

Ride 3 (Take the Long Way Home...) from Knoebel's to Steel Steeds.

This is the long version of the final segment, the ride back, of the proposed ride in September 2012. Although it includes the remaining covered bridges in Columbia County and a couple in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, the ride time clocks in at just over three hours. Although many of us would be fine with five hours of riding, I can appreciate that others might not. In later posts, I will provide some alternatives for "Ride 3." Please paste the following into a new page on your browser to display the route:

Those look like some nice routes Steve.  I wish I could comment more.  Even though I've been there I did little more than ride in and ride out because of all the rain.  I'm going to have to check the route I took coming in to the camp.  The last stretch was horrible, one little town after another with backed up traffic and speeds below 35 mph with a lot of stops.  Not fun, especially after having been on the road all day.

Ride 3a (if Ride 3 is A Bridge Too Far...) from Knoebel's to Steel Steeds.

This is a substantially shortened version of "Ride 3" from my October 19 post. Rather than a 3+ hour ride, this version is just over an hour. The two groups would travel together leaving Knoebel's, cross a couple of bridges together, then part company west of Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. Please paste the following into a new page on your browser to display the route:

http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=Knoebles+Pkwy&daddr=Old+Reading+Rd+to:40.9516841,-76.451714+to:T409+to:40.9929085,-76.4722711+to:40.9777283,-76.5010081+to:Covered+Bridge+Rd+to:PA-405+N&hl=en&ll=40.93634,-76.578827&spn=0.406154,0.64064&sll=40.995577,-76.456861&sspn=0.050724,0.08008&geocode=FfbJbwIduKdw-w%3BFaLgcAIdvn9x-w%3BFYTfcAIdfnBx-ykRl8i6BojFiTG6WLjYnxxJfg%3BFZhTcQId_x5x-w%3BFYyAcQIdMSBx-ynJer70cX3PiTELyUQQHrevbA%3BFUBFcQId8K9w-ynfLE16J33PiTHjCspa5vELVg%3BFXoAcQIdCuJr-w%3BFSW9cAIdVyxr-w&vpsrc=6&mra=dvme&mrsp=4&sz=14&via=2,4,5&t=m&z=11

A – Knoebel’s
B – Hollingshead Bridge
C – Rupert’s Bridge
D – Rishel Bridge

On the map, note the turnaround west of Bloomsburg near Routes 11 and 42 where the two ride routes separate. This is the same interchange that was completely submerged from Tropical Storm Lee as shown on my September 9 post in the "Maxi Scoot Meetup/Rally September 2012" thread. Here it is again:

By the time we might get there, a year after, it would be interesting to note any remaining evidence of flooding from the tropical storm.

Steve  -- out of curiosity, it had a look at a couple of your proposed rides for the rally.  Looks like fun.

Why are the routes straight line from point A to B and not a circle trip starting and ending at the same place?

A 3 hour sightseeing trip may take 5-6 hours when you go from the campground to your starting point, to the end of the ride and then back to the campground.

I am not being critical -- only curious.

OK, no problem. For these routes, the ending point of each ride is the starting point of the next ride. The first ride is from Steel Steeds to Centralia, the second is from Centralia to Knoebel's, and the third is from Knoebel's to Steel Steeds. Left unstated in my posts is that the three rides are intended to be consecutive with an extended stop after the first and second rides. Now that you have pointed it out, I can see that my intent might not have been sufficiently clear.

My primary reason for using three separate maps for the three rides was an attempt to keep each map simple. And, I wanted to keep an eye on the ride time prior to each stop. And, I have only recently started using Google Maps so if I messed something up adjusting a ride, there was less work if I had to start over.

Continued from the "Friday or Saturday Night Supper" thread...

Hey Steve,  what shall we do about lunches on your ride(s)?  We could all pick in and I could make bag lunches if need be?

Interesting that you should mention this, Maggie. At some point in the Spring, I am planning a "dry run" on the proposed ride routes to check on the condition of covered bridges, good photo opportunity spots, a lunch stop, or other interesting places worth pausing for a few moments besides Centralia and Knoebel's. Perhaps I'll re-start the ride planning thread and put the lunch thought out to the expected rallyers.

Right now, I'm looking at sometime in April or May for a "dry run" on the proposed ride routes. Ratchet will have completed her BRC by then, and it would be a great way to get some extended time riding experience. Anyone interested in joining us?

Although the proposed ride routes are a couple months old, we have never discussed starting times. My thoughts, which I have probably never posted or discussed with anyone else, were to leave Steel Steeds at 8:00 Saturday to arrive in Centralia shortly after 9:00. After an hour in Centralia, depart shortly after 10:00 and reach Knoebel's around 11:30. There are plenty of picnic areas at Knoebel's. We could bring bag lunches, or buy lunch.

I'll stop there and ask for your thoughts and comments. Is an 8:00 departure too early, too late, or just right? An hour in Centralia? Might want to take an hour and a half. Don't worry about how long the stop in Centralia is until we get there? Lunch at Knoebel's?

In the next month or so, I intend to ride the proposed routes to Centralia, Knoebel's, and the long covered bridge route. Haven't picked the exact day(s) yet, but I switch to a four-day work week for the summer, making a Friday morning start likely. Or perhaps ride to Lewisburg late on Thursday and start the actual route early on Friday. If anyone is interested in joining the fun, please respond or send a PM.

Monday should be the day to test ride the proposed routes. Turns out I didn't need to look far to find an enthusiastic new rider... someone ready to hone open road riding skills in anticipation of the September rally... someone to join the fun...

http://maxi-scoots.com/scoot/index.php?topic=3936.msg44621#msg44621

So I have found a more or less willing accomplice to do the honors. We'll haul Tabby and Scarlett to central Pennsylvania tomorrow for a two-day visit, which will include some other activities in the area as well as riding the routes.

Are the rides now confirmed -- total length, hours and WHEN -- Friday or Saturday?  Any other items on the agenda for the Rally?

Steve is working on the rides now... he and the family are headed there to confirm I think this week. After I can speak to him we will get a loose plan set.
