I found this article about SSTAM and Piaggio. I wish I had known this sooner, but I didn't have problems with finding a dealer until yesterday.

That article helps to explain some of the things I am seeing at the dealership in Louisville. Last year they were talking about the arrival of 2011 Piaggio products. It's March now the the dealer in Lexington is selling the last of his 2010's and his new 2011 scooters while the dealer in Louisville still has 2009's on the floor with some 2010's. Basically too many bikes flooding the market and the showroom floors in the last two years and insufficient sales due to the economic downturn. Piaggio and others overestimated how many scooters they could sell based on 2008 when sales were booming. When I was in the c-store business we called it manufacturer or middle man force outs. The manufacturer could show these nice sales figures if it worked out and if not the retailer got burned with unsalable stock. The ripples can turn into tidal waves pretty quickly and affect all the retailers adversly. Not to mention that the dealer here used to do dealer trades with the Scooter Superstore to get specific bikes that customers ordered. Now where will they go if the Chapter 11 doesn't work out or the creditors don't go along with the reorganization plan?

This mess is going to take a while to shake out and probably won't stabilize for at least another year or two. Since I am planning to purchase a new 250 or 300 this summer it is of great interest to me.
