I was out yesterday looking for opportunities for photographs. I decided to take a picture of the old Knik River Bridge. It’s something I’ve been wanting to do for some time. There is a bit of history here. I don’t remember when it was built, but I think sometime around 1938. During the big earthquake in 1964, it was severely damaged and Palmer was cut off from Anchorage until they could make repairs to it so it could be safely used again. The Glenn Hwy was rerouted to a different location that shortened the distance between Anchorage and Palmer by several miles. The old bridge was abandoned in 1975 and a new bridge built alongside it. I did this image in black and white because that really shows the character and age of the old bridge. The vehicle approaches have been bulldozed out so vehicles can’t get on the bridge, although pedestrian travel is fine. It remains a historical site. On a side note, the Knik River flows out of the Knik Glacier up in the Chugach Mountains, out to the upper end of Knik Arm of Cook Inlet. It is a major route for salmon spawning.

Very interesting. Are the pavement ripples just from age?

Just due to age. The understructure is really deteriorating, and I think it’s causing the asphalt to ripple like that. It would surprise me if they condemn it and tear it down in the near future. It could be deemed an attractive nuisance.

Very nice shot!
Thank you, Maggie. I’ve been after that one for some time. I finally got the opportunity. Lot of fun scrambling over lots of glare ice and icy humps in the ground to get to it. But it was worth it.
