Saint Louis, MO 2020

« on: July 06, 2020, 04:01:02 AM »

Bob and I had to change our plans to go to Colorado this summer because you guessed it “The Virus”.

So we headed up to Eau Claire, Wi on Friday July 3rd.  We read and article in Road Runner Magazine last February.  Titled the Midwestern Dragon.  So we thought we would check it out.  It was closer to home, my vacation was shortened because of work.  Wisconsin was in a better place with COVID.

July 4th we road “The Orchard Ridge Loop” 134 miles.  We went to Pammy K’s for pie but they where closed for the 4th.  We wanted to stop and Glass Orchard but they were also closed. Holiday I guess.  It is a Apple orchard with a showroom that displays glass apples, pumpkins and jewelry crafted by the two owners who are glass blowing artisans.

Onward to Elmers Auto and Toy Museum.  This was quite the attraction. It is located in Fountain City, WI on Eagles Bluff on the Mississippi River.  The highest point on the River.  He has about 5 different buildings filled with 35,000 toys, a 100 pedal trackers and cars dating back to the 1800’s .   Along with over a 100 full size muscle cars, motorcycles mostly daring back to the 50’s and 70’s .  I saw a load of Cushman Scooters dating back in the 30’s, 40’s and so on.   We had a picnic lunch overlooking the river. I was only able t get a few pictures.  I took one when I first walked in but then I saw the signs no Photography in the buildings.   Elmer passed away a year ago this July he was 79. Not sure what is going to happen with this Museum. They are open on weekends.  He also has an auto salvage business on his property.

Here are some pictures.

The roads  were great some were a bit worn from the winters.  Great scenery and we has curves and elevation.  Something we don’t get in Chicago.  :D

Today, Sunday we rode “The Pulp Stacker Loop”   151 miles

This took us north of Eau Clair towards Chippewa Falls and then north on 178 to Cornell.  The famous stacker is located in Cornell’s riverfront Mill Yard Park it is a pulpwood stacker that dates back to the 1900’s.  It is on the National Register of Historic Places.  It was interesting to talk to the older gentlemen who worked at the visitor center.  After we left there we went into the Brunet Island SP for a ride through the park.  The scenery was pretty,  the roads nice, and not crowded.

We went trough the town of Bruce.  This one is for you minimac.

We then made our way to Bloomer to the Main Street Cafe in The Hotel Anderson for lunch and there famous pie.  We checked to make sure it was open. We were disappointed we couldn’t try Pammy K’s.  The pie was awesome.  I had blueberry cream cheese. Bob had Dutch Apple. Lunch was good too.

Here are some pictures from the day.

Today we rode “The Little House In the Big Woods Loop” 183 miles.

We headed west on SR 85 to Cr P to Cr N towards Pepln, WI.  Roads were scenic, had nice curves and sweepers.  Some area were technical.  Pepin is where Laura Ingalls Wilder was born.  Her first book was about growing up in the Big Woods.  There is a wayside park dedicated to her.  We were able to go into the house.  No one was there just the house with a sign on the door please close the door when you leave.

After we left there we went on to Stockholm to the Stockholm Pie and General Store.  We had our lunch there.  The biggest ham sandwiches we ever ate.  And then of course pie.  I had the Caramel Apple Crunch it was very good.  I got two blueberry pie cookies for back at the motel.  Yum.

We headed out of Stockholm for our second half of the loop.  We ran into some bridge closings on Cr O and SR 72.  We didn’t get to complete the Road Runner loop as they suggested but we did have good day of riding and eating. Just little cooler but still hot.  No rain yeah.

Here are some pics from the day.

Today Our 4th and final loop “The Highgrounds Loop”

We headed to Osseo to have pie at The Norske Nook it was about 30 miles southeast of our motel.  Had I known about there breakfast I would of not eaten at the motel.  Bob didn’t eat at the motel.  Didn’t care for there selection.  I had blueberry pie he had an omelette.  There menu was to die for.  We are going back tomorrow on our way back home.

We continued on our route towards Neillsville.  Just before we arrived at the Memorial Park we came across the Silver Dome Ball Room.  It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  They still use it.  We then arrived at the Highground Memorial Park sitting on 155 acres in tribute to Wisconsin Soldiers.  There are separate areas honoring soldiers from WWI through the Iraq War.  They have two Honor Rides each year.  Memorial Day and in August.  Very well done.

After spending some time there we continued our loop back towards Eau Claire.  The heat was a little less.  We lucked out and had no rain but we could see it around us.  A couple of county roads we were on had some construction.  We rode about 7 to 8 miles of different types of gravel/dirt roads.  The longest stretch about 5 miles.  All and all it was a good day.

We head home tomorrow, after  the Norske Nook stop. 😊. We had a great 6 days riding and seeing some interesting sites.  When done we will have ridden close to 1300 miles.  Our Best Western Plus worked out well for 5 nights.    Here are some pictures from the day.

One last entry on this adventure.  We left the Best Western just before 10.  About 30 miles down the road we stopped at the Norske Nook in Osseo as was my plan.

I ordered the Steak Lefsa Wrap, steak, scrambled eggs, cheese, onion, hash browns with hollandaise sauce and one Norwegian pancake.  Lefsa is a Norwegian type of tortilla is the best way I can describe it.  My Mom would make a big Norwegian dinner on Christmas Eve for my Dad’s family.  She worked hard preparing this meal with 7 kids under her feet.  It would be lutefisk, which is a gross fish I would not eat, potatoes rolled up in the Lefsa.  Us kids ate it without the fish of course?   It was absolutely delicious.  :D.    Afterward I ordered a piece of Mint chocolate chip cream pie.  Again amazing.   Here are some pictures.

We got home around 5.  It was hot, had just a sprinkle of rain which cooled things off for a bit but it came back.  Rode a little over 300 miles.  Had a great trip.
