Title: Doing this meetup safely.
Post by: klaviator on April 05, 2020, 04:51:27 PM
I'm not an expert and haven't stayed in a Holiday Inn Express in a long time but I don't see that there will be a vaccine or cure for Covid 19 by September.  It is possible that restrictions will have lifted enough for this rally to still happen.  I do expect that social distancing rules may still be in place.  This means that all sitting down together in a restaurant or hanging out close together might not be a good idea, or even legal.  Obviously September is still a long way off and we can't know what the situation will be like.  Since many of us are stuck at home with plenty of time on our hands, I thought this might be a good time to start brainstorming and discussing how we could do this rally safely, assuming we do it at all.

Some thoughts.  Social distancing will not be an issue while we are actually riding.  While stopped it's just a matter of maintaining that 6 foot distance.  Everyone should carry things like hand sanitizer, cleaning wipes and maybe gloves.

Lunch stops?  Maybe do takeout and then find a nice place to eat it.  Having everyone carry a folding chair might make this easier.  Restrooms might be an issue.

Dinner?  Might have to do takeout or maybe split into smaller groups at restaurants rather than everyone sitting at one table.  I am assuming that when restaurants open they will be under strict rules of cleanliness for dining in which would make it reasonably safe to eat at a restaurant.

We've briefly discussed this on another thread.   As far as when we would call the rally a go or no go can be decided closer near.

The above are all valid points.

I have ALWAYS traveled with a can of Lysol.  I don't care if I'm in the Ritz Carlton or the Not So Super 8, I  always have been in practice of spraying the crap out of any place I sleep.  I also have always had a pair of disposable flip flops for showers and walking around a room.  This year will be no different.

Lunch stops can certainly be go in and grab food and eat outside etc.  A couple of places I had in mind for us to eat would work with the exception of the Branson ride which I could alter the route  to pick up food and eat down by the damn.

Pete and I have generally never been ones to eat the groups when at the rally.  We like to eat on our own or in  smaller groups then get together afterwards evening adult beverages.

Not that I am going to be there, but I thought I’d put my nose in here on this discussion.

So if you are limited to mid day Take Out fare, how are you going to deal with inclement weather, stand around with limp fries and a soggy Whopper? And maybe I’m too much of a purist, but assuming that folks are actually going to RIDE to the rally, how on earth can someone add a folding lawn chair to all the gear they’d be carrying on the scoot anyway?

You have a valid point about how to handle eating takeout on a rainy day.  As for carrying a folding chair, I have hauled all my camping gear including a folding chair on my scooter.  Since I plan on staying at the motel bringing along a chair is a non issue for me.

Actually most of the rides if need be I can get us to a park area to eat.

Steve and I once sat in the gutter in Cumberland, TN and ate hot dogs while everyone else was off eating in a fancy “Eye-talian”  restaurant.

Where there is a will there is a way!

Why is anyone fretting about this now? We're five months out! We'll know by the middle of August if it's going to happen, and if it doesn't-worrying now isn't going to change anything, and two-three weeks is plenty of time to prepare. (says the guy who packs the night before leaving)

As I stated earlier the Rally is 5 months away.  We don’t have any registration fees with our Rally.  All I have done is asked for the time off from work and made a couple of motel reservations which I can cancel 24 hours ahead of time.    As Maggie  stated where there is a will there is away.  Let’s hope restaurants, motels etc. are up and running with people back to work.  We can always eat in smaller groups and speak a little louder. :)  Lets think positive.

As for the folding chair.  Bob and I have two different types we have. The Helinox and Kermit.  We prefer the Helinox lighter and a little smaller for packing on a bike.  The Helinox fits in either my sidecase as or my top trunk. :)

Bruce,  you make me laugh. That’s how I feel.

I'm not worrying, just trying to plan ahead.  It's not like most of us are all that busy right now.

It doesn't hurt to think about changes in how we "rally".   I get days where I get depressed thinking it's not going to happen :-(  Cathy slapped me around a bit on the phone about it the other day, Thanks Cathy!

I still look at routes daily, as many of you know I throw routes out there but they are not "final" like ever.

One of my favorite lunches was at our first rally.  We stopped at a Scheetz store and we all bought what we wanted for lunch.  Then we ate at Kettle Creek State Park.   Hard to beat the scenery.

My previous post wasn't targeting anyone in particular. Worrying about stuff we have no control over doesn't accomplish a thing. There's better ways to spend our current free time.
Seiing that picture of Rich made me miss him again...:(

I've been doing a lot of "constructive reading". If  for some reason the rally gets cancelled, I'll be going there anyway when I can.

We're going either way unless they shut everything down completely.

Arkansas is a riding mecca...  we could have a three week rally to be honest :-)  We are so lucky to be close.

From what I've read, alcohol (the stronger/purer the better) kills the COVID19 virus.  For the record, this is not my doctoral specialty.  However, by logical extension it seems the more we drink, the better off we'll be.  The only part I haven't quite figured out is the drinking and riding pieces ... they don't work so well together.

Has to be 140 proof or more, don't want to see anyone riding after a few swigs of that.

Speak for yourself.  I wanna see Karin riding a water cooler down a hill!

Like she wanted too after drinking moonshine in Huzzah.   LMAO!!

I did redo the Wednesday ride with social distancing in mind.  I basically reversed the route.  We can pick up lunch and wat down by Table Rock Lake.  In a way it helped me get us on a few more MO roads after lunch, so a win win.

I will work on the others as I have time ;)
