Title: Decided to get a 2018 Goldwing Tour DCT
Post by: CathyN on July 20, 2019, 02:09:19 AM
Well folks I decided to update my ride.  My 2009 SilverWing has almost 83,500 miles on it.  I bought it in 2010 with 3700 miles on it.  This has been my only bike I have ever ridden.  Last September Bob and I test rode an Africa Twin DCT  and a 2018 Goldwing Tour DCT for just a short jaunt.  I liked the GW better.

Last Saturday I went for a longer ride almost 200 miles and 4 1/2 hours later.  I loved it. Very comfortable and agile.  The extra 300 pounds did not bother me.  The DCT was awesome.  ABS was great to have.  Since Bob and I go on long distance trips quite often I wanted a comfortable ride.  The 2018 GW Tour DCT gives me that.  I should be able to pick up my new bike next week.  They found a new one Zero miles out of the box.

We traded Bob’s 2004 BMW R1150R in.  I was going to keep my SW but decided to give it to my brother up in
WI so he and my sister-in-law could enjoy it on the less crowded roads up there.  He is just north of the IL border.  I can visit my Swing anytime.  They got their MC licenses 15 years ago but never could get a bike.  Life got in the way.

So that is my big news.  I am very excited to get to riding this new bike and go.  Hope to see some of you in NY this September.   Here is a picture of me last September when I went for a test ride.  I am getting the Pearl White as seen in the photo. Very Happy

Awesome. So if bob traded in the BMW, is he gonna ride on the back?

Nooooo,  he still has his 2014 BMW R1200GS.

He thought I was going to ride my SW up to my brothers. He would ride my GW and then I could go on the back for the ride home.  I said your dreaming.  Snap out of it!  My brother can come down to Chicago and pick up the SW.  Maybe I would follow him back home on the GW just to ride.  Men!!!!   LOL.

I miss my wing almost daily. I did notice and could no longer cope with the extra 300 pounds, hence the Spyder. Good on you, I will be vicariously enjoying your new bike.

Congratulations Cathy !!!  Very happy for you.  I can tell from your smile in the picture of the test ride how happy you must be.   Bet the sales guy was waiting for your return too ..... he knew you would be back !  (Hope you don't play poker ...)

I think my smile in reading your account of your purchase was almost as wide as yours in happiness for you.  Better let Bob go for a ride on it .... we men like new things too !!  LOL  That pearly white looks great.

Be safe and enjoy the ride.

Mike

Awesome!  You’re gonna love that Gold Wing.  I think you’ll find it to be a sportbike on steroids.  That’s how I felt about my ‘05 GL1800.  I have regretting selling it when we moved back to Alaska.  I might not have quit riding if I’d brought it up here.

Honda has certainly re-designed the Gold Wing, and it looks great in it’s new clothes in that white.  Don’t know how you feel about “accessorizing” motorcycles with pinstriping, but a dark purple pinstriping would look fantastic. And you already know, that thing is so smoooooth you’ll be 50 miles down the road before you realize it.  Have fun, and go bend some tight curves.  The Wing is very good at doing that.

We were looking at them again today at the dealership, and there's a pretty good chance one will be in the garage before the end of the season. Teresa wants another large bike with super-duper pillion accommodations that I can ferry her around on when she doesn't want to ride her own machine. She will be putting her '15 BMW R1200R for sale locally during the upcoming Sturgis rally, and if it sells, we will likely put the money towardsLa new GL1800, though it may be the manual 6-speed model rather than the auto version, it's a couple G's less.

JB, at the dealer I bought mine it was a $1000 more.  That is the Tour model.  Since I am not a “shifty” kind of gal that wasn’t a choice for me.  The DCT is really nice though I must say.  Especially in traffic.  A co-worker of mine has a 2009 and GW his friend updated his to 2018 DCT and said it was the best thing he ever did. Would the GW be Teresa’s bike?

Would the GW be Teresa’s bike?

Sorta. It would be titled in her name, but they're simply too large for her 5'4", 125 lb frame to safely manage. I would be her chauffeur, she would ride 'cupcake' exclusively on a GL if we bought one, same as we did when we had our 2003 and 2008 1800's.

We are also seriously considering a low-mile, 2014, BMW 1600 GTi that is locally available. We would save 6 or 7 G's by buying it over a new GL1800, so that's a definite possibility.

Bob and I went to Des Plaines Honda and did all the paper work went over the bike.  Traded in his BMW R1150R.  Thank you Lord it is out of the Garage.  Very Happy.  Almost wasn’t when he misplaced the keys to the BMW.  Had them 10 days ago.  An hour in a half later he found them.  I thought I was never going to see that bike ever leave the garage.

Honda is putting a 12 volt plug and a couple of Ciro handle bar mounts for accessories.   I will pick up the bike Thursday. :2tu:  here are a couple of pics from this evening.

I see makes sense.  Good luck in your decision.

Honda gave us a better trade-in for Teresa's BMW than the BMW dealership would for the used 2015 BMW 1600GTi, sooooooo....CathyN and 'Captain Crabbypants' have a bit more in common today than we did yesterday...though we chose the manual 6-speed GL over the DCT model, but only because of the difference in price.

But now that we have a new GL, pillion duty will be transferred from the 2013 650 Burgman I bought barely two months ago, to the Wing....so now, I will probably sell
the Burgman and go back to 'sniffing around' those Royal Enfield 650's again.

Happy for all of you, Cathy and JB/Teresa.  Those new Wings are really nice looking.  Because of Honda's rules and my desire to try the CB1100 I was unable to test ride one at Americade last year as I could only take one bike out.  I really like the slimmer look of this new model.  My friend John came back from the test ride that day and from the look in his eyes I thought he was going to buy one as soon as he got home.  Happy trails!

They say that “it’s different on a Harley,” but there is something magical about riding a Gold Wing.  I don’t know if it’s the smoothness, the power, the handling or the comfort, or what it is, but it is the whole package, and why Gold Wing owners keep coming back.  This newly redesigned Wing looks very nice, indeed.  Cathy, you are going to love your new Wing.

I have put about 80 miles on it since I picked it up Thursday evening.  It has been different that’s for sure.  It has been fun riding it.  Very comfortable.  Lots to learn with all the tech.  Been busy with a lot of commitments this past weekend.

I love that helmet.  Very visible.  I had a couple Nolan helmets.  They make good stuff.

Cathy, once you get used to the bike and its weight, you’ll find that it is capable of handling that you might have thought possible.  I found that that a combination of counter steering plus weight shifting to the inside of a curve will make that big boy bound around some amazingly tight curves. It’s as much sport bike as it is touring bike.

May I ask what you paid for the helmet? They're asking almost $400 for that model over here without the N-com and in white. There's a premium if you want the hi-viz.

I paid $400 at the BMW Rally. No tax or shipping.  They shipped from Aurora but it took 6 weeks.  They were b/o’d.  Had to wait to get them from Italy.  Normal price is $439-$459.  The NCom unit B901 r was $250.00 plus tax. Nolan’s fit my head and are very comfortable for me. This is my 3rd one.  The Helmet House was the best price I found. But since I was at the Rally I bought there.

That's about the same price here and we're hit with 24% sales tax. (not a typo). I've ALWAYS had Nolans and love them but the price is getting to be a bit much!

Taxation update!!!

Most of the helmets sold here are in the €50-€100 range. Just enough to keep the cops off your butt.
Of the helmets actually expected to provide protection €200 is the average number.
IMHO, €400 is about the starting point for something worth while.

So, in light of all these facts they've (finally) figured out they're lowering the sales tax to 13%
Life is good!

A good helmet is worth the money paid for it, for the protection it provides.  I always have to laugh at these guys who ride a certain brand of motorcycle that calls for maintaining the appropriate “image,” yet choose to wear those stupid looking beanie hat “helmets.”  Apparently not much to protect?  I liked my full face helmets.  My last helmet was a Shoei with the flip front chin bar.  I still have it, just  “in case” I have an opportunity to use it again.

We’ve ridden over the Bighorns a couple times, and the Gold Wing was a pleasure to ride.  It took those tight curves with aplomb and ease.  That GL1800 was an amazing machine for both touring and sporty riding, and now, the new edition is apparently better at both.  The ease with which it takes those curves is incredible, and there is power to spare, going up those steep inclines.  We rode through the Bighorns on our way home from the very first Maxi Scoot rally in Minnesota.
