Title: Idea for new thread ... unusual/interesting names of places
Post by: sirkitrider-2 on September 19, 2017, 03:35:19 AM
How about a new thread featuring unusual/interesting names of places you've ridden to or thru.  I'll go first.

Introducing Bugtussle KY.

(https://s26.postimg.org/oc6ik6qsl/IMG_7415.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/oc6ik6qsl/)

(https://s26.postimg.org/y87ljtwkl/IMG_7418.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/y87ljtwkl/)

It's literally a wide spot in the road. Population two. Then we left. Population now 0.   Nice roads there and back though.

Lots of fun named places in Texas.  Been through most of them including Uncertain.  Rarely stop to take pictures though.  Will try to remember to next time I pass through one.

Yeah, I figured there would be plenty of fun ones from all over.   It's kinda like the "mail box fun" thread ... I don't stop to takes pics of a lot of them either.  Need to do better for both😀

We have HELL here in Michigan... been there a couple times... Naturally a cheesy tourist stop.
Also a place up in the thumb area of the state called Bad Axe... see, there is a sign over there
to the left in my avatar.

I've been to Hell and back. Also ate a cheeseburger in Paradise(that's Mi.too) on my Hell to Paradise ride.  We made a quick stop at The Gay Bar, in Gay, Mi- not that there's anything wrong with that. A few miles to the south of me is Phoenix. If I head to the north and east, I hit Mexico and Texas( in central NY). I still prefer some  of the towns in Pennsylvania though. I don't know of anyone that doesn't enjoy Intercourse.

A ride we do in MO takes us through Licking then a few miles later Success.   The juvenile in me points this out each time we are on the ride.

There is  place in Nova Scotia called "Black Hole".  We decided when the road crews checked out distances that they went too close to the event horizon and never returned;  because the road sign that points the direction to Black Hole has no distance shown, whereas the same sign post shares a sign giving direction to near by Halls Harbour and the distance is given.  These places are handy Cape Split in the Bay of Fundy.

The town name is only slightly unusual, but the team name cracks me up.
I did look up who Nimrod was, but that's not what it means in my neck of the woods.

On our ride today we went through Styx but we didn't cross over the river :-)  Not much to take a picture of there except the name sign.  Picture was right back into the sun so it did not come out to good.  You can barely read the sign.

Cool thread.  Here in WNC we have Luck and Trust right next to each other. Also Blackjack and Fair Play close by in South Carolina. Went through Gaysport Ohio a couple years ago but didn't stop. Wasn't going to take any chances. It's right next to Blue Rock.
Already been through Hell and Paradise as well as had a beer at the Gay Bar and camped one night at Big Bone Lick. Had my long time girlfriend with for that one.

Fun thread. :2tu:

Saturday I rode thru the community of Lucky.  I actually lived there 2 years in the 90's.  I did NOT feel lucky to live there though.  In fact, I thought it was the arm pit of the county.  Good place to ride thru .....

Also rode thru Temperance Hall on the way back home ... reckon were that name came from???   Beautiful country side and farm land.  No bars

We have more fun and interesting ones around ... I just haven't had time to get back to them thus far ....

One of my occasional ride routes passes through Detour, Maryland.

(https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/88/2016-08-20_16_05_23_View_east_along_Maryland_State_Route_77_%28Middleburg_Road%29_between_Keysville_Road_and_Circle_Drive_in_Detour%2C_Carroll_County%2C_Maryland.jpg/800px-2016-08-20_16_05_23_View_east_along_Maryland_State_Route_77_%28Middleburg_Road%29_between_Keysville_Road_and_Circle_Drive_in_Detour%2C_Carroll_County%2C_Maryland.jpg)

If you have the opportunity to take a detour to Detour, or if the road is in a condition that makes a detour unnecessary, the Village Store in Detour is an excellent stop for lunch.

We lived near there in the community of Fruitland '95-97 where I attended Bible School.   Every time we returned to the area after visiting folks in TN, the kids, teenagers at the time, would always say "back to the Bat Cave Robin", as we got off the exit on I-26.  Bat Cave, Chimmney Rock, Lake Lure all kinda run together.  Really pretty area.

Mann's Choice, PA.
A local politician was to name the place. Someone made a note on the map indicating it was his choice. The time expired and the map was printed with the note as the name.

I traveled through the place around 2003. Saw a donkey in a pen by the road. Stopped and talked with the owners, fed and petted the donkey. Exchanged email addresses with the owner. The donkey was old and expected to pass soon. 2 years later I got an email from the owner that simply stated "Our ass has passed".

Also yesterday. The town of Soddy-Daisy.  It's a bedroom community to Chattanooga,  in the NE section of Hamilton County.

Had a cup of coffee at the McD's there before heading up the switchbacks of Mountain Road-Mowbray Pike ... which is a section of the original Trail of Tears.

Soddy and Daisy used to be two towns.  Saw a business named Twin Cities ... something or other.  In 1969 they merged to become Soddy-Daisy.    Home of Poe's Tavern.  Google it if interested.   Also, a local mom and pop meat & three, hamburger joint called ... Whimpies.

Interesting/unusaul name though, I guess.

We have a lot of unusual named cities/communities in Alabama.
Beehive, Rainbow, Cuba, Five Fork, Lick Skillet, etc.
Here is a link to 30 of them: http://www.onlyinyourstate.com/alabama/30-alabama-bizarre-town-names/ (http://www.onlyinyourstate.com/alabama/30-alabama-bizarre-town-names/)
Now, due to this thread, I've started a new personal Google Map to pin them, then see if I can ride and take photos of them.
So far, of the first ten I've pinned, only 8 of them have something there to photo with the name to prove/document when I'm there.
You know: No photo, it didn't happen.
Maybe a road sign with GPS coordinates.

Edit: even though it wasn't stated by the OP, I'm assuming the challenge was to go and photo document the place existence with your bike?

Not all names for interesting places are towns.  There are some interesting names on creeks around here.  Crossed this one on my ride last weekend.

If you want to go nowhere, there's a road to get there.

Ran across a couple more interesting creek names.  Pot Rack Creek and Desert Creek.  Also found the story of how the names came to be.  Back in 1844 a group of three men ventured up into what is now Collin County.  At that time it was still Indian controlled territory and few white men went there for fear of getting their hair lifted.  They found a creek and set up camp on it's bank.  Two of the men went exploring and found another creek.  There they discovered a branch that had been stuck into the creek bank by the Indians to hang their pots on.  So they named it Pot Rack Creek.  When they got back to their camp they discovered the third man had deserted so they named that creek Desert Creek.

Finding Desert Creek also answered something I had been puzzling about for a while.  North of these ceeks there is a small town named Desert.  Short of the namers just being fond of pie after supper did not know where the name came from.  Seems Desert Creek parallels the highway up past the town and the town was built on it's banks.  So the town was named after the creek.  Not much there.  Just a few houses, a gas station, and a cemetery.  The town highway sign is beside the cemetery.

No new posts in 3 months, has everyone quite riding? Also lots of "X's" where pictures used to be. Mostly this is just a bump.

More central of NC is Climax, I've wondered if it's coincidence Climax is situated between Pleasant Garden and Liberty.

Another thread reminded me of this, Bad Axe, in Michigan's thumb area.

Couldn't resist adding this town and this important piece of Newfoundland history that recently took place ...  :cflag2:

Hopefully we'll have a personal Dildo experience when we're touring down east in NL & Labrador next summer.

Dildo is about a 30 minute ride from where I live, nice little town. Will you be touring on two wheels?

One of our favorite “places” is actually a road south of Caldwell, Idaho called Chicken Dinner Road.  It was such an unusual name that we were enamored of it.  Turns out it got its name from the fact that a farmer and his family invited a candidate for governor to their house for a chicken dinner back in 1904 or something like that.  We got a chuckle out of the name, and we still talk about it.
