Title: Fall Colors
Post by: Maggie on September 27, 2012, 09:09:03 PM
Anyone starting to see any color??

I'm surprised with our drought this year we are getting anything!  The yellow tree I took on the way to work in the rain.  It really stood out as it was the only tree around that was turnng color.  The orange tree stood out behind our house this morning as I looked for deer.

As usual it's still a little early around here.

To get the most vibrant colors, we need a couple of nites with ground frost.  Then things really turn.  A little early yet.

As usual it's still a little early around here.

But not quite as bad as last year, we've at least been below 100F most of September.  Maybe soon...

Some patches of color last weekend.  I've been scouting some new areas over the past summer and have found some great routes through the pioneer valley to the Berkshires (west of I-91).  Hope to share them with y'all.

The high country is close to maximum color right now.  We rode the peak to Peak highway from Golden up to Estes Park last weekend.  In places the colors were spectacular.

Still waiting for color here.  Can't wait.  A few days ago a friend took me on some roads I'd never been on that will show some awesome views of the mountains when the leaves change.

I was just in Wisconsin this past weekend and the colors are pretty vibrant already.  Still mostly green here around Boston with some hints of color.

I have one last big ride planned this year, I hope it works out and I get some nice fall foliage in the shots.

Thanks, we are getting some color.  It doesn't stay long.  The colors turn then trees loose the leafs quickly.  Guess effect of this years drought?

Title: Re: Fall Colors
Post by: Robin on October 20, 2012, 02:01:22 AM
It's been cooler for about a week now and we're starting to get some fall color.  Today I did a photo walk-around in the woods to see what I came back with.

Color today was startling in the sky.  These first three, I did not use a circular polarizer, and did not 'shop them, the sky color is as-shot.  Not a lot of foliage color yet, though.

Now here's an early bloomer, so to speak.

Off subject:  This guy I met hiking the other way on the trail.  As we met he asked "You want my picture?" and I said "Yes!" and he laughed and said "Just kidding?"  as he went on down the trail.  I said "I wasn't."  Click. "Got-cha."  He giggled and disappeared into the mists of time.

I hoped this one would be tack-sharp.  It isn't.  But it's still a keeper, although certainly not a contest entry.

I was surprised to see a lonesome patch of wildflowers hanging on to their blooms.  It won't be much longer, there were blue petals on the ground, too.

So, I guess since we're not seeing much color change yet, someone decided to 'do it yourself'.

And that gave me the idea that, if I couldn't get anyone else to change the colors, I'd do my own.

Wow, Maggie.  That shot looks more like the last one in my post immediately above below yours, but mine was seriously photoshopped.  We'll never ever get that kind of thing around here.

Edited to say 'below'.  I was thinking 'above' because I was setting mine up when you posted yours

It does rather.  In the original it doesn't remind one of that, so it has to be the color shifting.

Occasionally I'll have a pic that is just boring, but has potential, so I'll toy with the colors.  That's about the fourth time I've done that.

Beautiful photos ladies.  Robin I especially like the early bloomer.

Thank you, Dan.

Robbin, great butterfly and fantastic create your own color.

It's suppose to rain here this weekend, what's left afterward will depend on how much wind and rain. I took a few shots at work a couple of days ago, some on FB may have already seen them.

She stopped, did a couple of poses when she saw the camera then dashed up a tree.

It's might near the end of October and it is right there in the open therefore qualifying as fall color.

Great Zippy, I really do like that porch!

Beautiful day today, suppose to turn ugly starting tomorrow and remaining color will more than likely be beat to the ground by next week. So off to the Cherohala Skyway to attempt capturing a bit of what remains. Well you had to be there, some cloud cover with beams of light breaking through illuminating various patches of forest, stuff I can never capture. Wish I had carried a tripod I could have done the bracket and blend bit which would have helped a lot. Anyway, wish you had been there to see it as I saw.

Like the moon shot.

Totally experimental.  I took a bunch of those with different settings.  That one I did with auto-focus off and tried to manually focus between about 15 feet and infinity.  Looks like I got closer to infinity, but it worked better than any of the others.  The moon out of focus was dumb looking, just an under-done biscuit in the air.  It worked better with the moon mostly in focus and the leaves somewhat out of focus.

You really can't tell what this stuff is going to look like until you get the images on the computer and see them on-screen, that little four inch monitor on the camera just teases you.  Of course, that still beats the dickens out of the old film days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Gosh I love digital!

Love the autumn photos.  Just a beautiful time of year.  I am starting to tire from raking leaves though, living next to a forest preserve has some drawbacks.

Robin I think the one with the moon came out good but I like the first one with the Buzzard the best.  And yes Zippygirl it wasn't a hawk it was a turkey buzzard.  Ugly birds on up close but beautiful when they are in flight.

Billg, that was a small white oak that was just starting to turn so parts of the leaves were still green.

Maggie love the picture of the light through the leaf.

Robbin, Craig, Maggie all great stuff, glad that some further south can extend the fall color.

Though higher elevations are bare and Frankenstorm Sandy brought snow to the mountains last week there is still color in some areas. I had hoped to get to the mountains and attempt capturing some snow and fall colors together circumstances prevented such. If you visit GSMNP web sites there are plenty of great photos of the event. Yesterday I did the driving for a early morning critter relocation rescue transporting seven dogs to Corbin, KY, where they were transferred for another leg of a relay ending some time last night somewhere in Canada. Transporting critters is all 'Her Majesty's' doing, I only sometimes do the driving or provide navigational support, though yesterday there was this one eyed shih tzu mix riding in the wife's lap. She had this under bite smile and kept trying to crawl over in my lap, her one eye shining brightly through matted blue/grey fur. She was so sweet, the dog not 'Her Majesty'. I hope she finds a good home, both. Anyway, there was still enough fall to make the trip enjoyable, though it was cold in Corbin and I thought I saw a few snow flakes while waiting for the dogs to be transferred to the next vehicle. One thing concerning roadside picture taking opportunities, the most interesting sights are rarely accompanied by a place to stop. If there is a place to stop you are past it before observing the opportunity and by the time you can turn around and return any changeable features that made the scene interesting are no longer there.

Enough color and sights to make the trip interesting. I carried the Panasonic Ultrazoom set to Auto rather than the DSLR. I am always amazed at the results these little cameras provide without fiddling with controls, if they only made them with a full sized processor.

It was a great view with a bit of remaining color and the cloud or fog covering hill tops.

If this great Fall weather holds up for a few more days, I'll get out next week and take some local pictures.

Seems like all the local Maple, Alder and Willow trees suddenly started their Fall colours at once. Looks really pretty.

We went to east Texas today and there is still some nice color over that way.

This one was taken outside the restaurant in Palestine.
(http://s16.postimage.org/i6e4i6nvl/Palestine_003.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/i6e4i6nvl/)

This one at a cache spot just north of Jacksonville.  It reminded me of confetti falling.
(http://s7.postimage.org/5ve4x08jr/Palestine_004.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/5ve4x08jr/)

This one at a cache spot southeast of Van.
(http://s10.postimage.org/cyz210t1h/Palestine_006.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/cyz210t1h/)

As was this one.  It didn't come out with as much impact as I hoped.  It was taken with the sun behind the tree trunk and the light shining through the yellow leafs.

Thanks guys, I shot that Van picture with the framing in mind.  I saw the old dead tree and when I walked around to the side of it I noticed it formed kind of a picture frame for the tree behind it.

Title: Re: Fall Colors
Post by: Buffalo on November 26, 2012, 05:50:52 PM
I took that last picture and cropped it down some then played with the brightness and contrast to get it to look more like what I was seeing when I looked up into the trees.  The leaves were just glowing like they were lighted internally.

Sorry to be late to this party but a (daughter's) wedding (prep & recovery) and the holiday sort of kept me busy.  The tree in our front yard was pretty spectacular this year.  First really caught my eye with the window view (my PC seat is right next to it) which prompted me to make some time and take it in.  It's amazing how it changes color as the (sun's) lighting changes.

Scarlet Oak.  Actually I was sort of disappointed in it the first 10-15 years after planting (by then it was probably 20-25) but thereafter it really started to show its stuff.  I don't know if that's normal for the species, a function, of weather, changes in the soil (heavy red clay hereabouts but I did start heavily mulching under it) ... but for whatever reason it's really done well the past 10 years or so.  Of course, some years better than others, but this was good one.

Title: Re: Fall Colors
Post by: Buffalo on November 27, 2012, 07:00:28 PM
Figured it was some kind of oak by the look of the leaves.  The color looks a lot like what we get on the Texas red oaks around here but the leaf is shaped different.

Oops, I lied (unintentionally) ... it's a Scarlet Maple

(I'd just typed my daughter's address and she lives on Scarlet Oak - copy and paste errors apparently occur in one's brain as well as on computers).  It dawned on me when I Googled it and started reading about scarlet oak acorns.  No acorns here.  This dear tree sends out thousands of seeding helicopters in the spring.

Stu, homeowners who have up to 43' motorhomes drive down that blvd.  That's the way to the storage lot.  They keep the trees trimmed back enough that you'd have no problem. :)
